  1. I have been homeschooling a long time (18 years), and it use to bother me something awful to hear my child hated school. I bent over backwards to figure out why, to change it, etc. I finally realized that some of them just don't like it. I now take the suck it up approach.
  2. We don't watch the DVD all in one sitting. So, Monday we watch the vocabulary and sayings. We go over first part in workbook. Do a few prayers. Tuesday we review voc./saying and watch derivative section on DVD. Wednesday we watch grammar section on DVD and review. We do the derivatives in the workbook. Thursday, we do any translating (watch DVD if there is that part) and do the translating exercises in the book. We usually play some of the Latin games I created to help study. Friday, they take the quiz.
  3. I am wondering what do you think are the greatest needs of homeschoolers? Is it more variety of curriculum (if so which subjects), support for mothers, organization ideas, method/philosophy info, teaching ideas, working with multiple ages/large families, or what?
  4. We are on our 3rd child driving. We bought an older car and put the title in our name. Ds can drive it. (we pay insurance, he pays for gas) Once he is an adult, he can purchase the car from us or buy his own. One dc decided to get her own so we had the old car for the next child to drive.
  5. He sounds like my now 20 yr old ds. He tantrumed a lot. Finally had him evaluated at age 10 by a neuro.psy. He has adhd, ODD, SID, visual processing problem and bipolar. They were hesitant to label him bipolar as a child but by 17, they were sure. Looking back, i wished i would have had him evaluated sooner and sent him to school. I am STILL living this nightmare with this chid. Only difference now is he is done with school but he still has rage episodes. I would get your child evaluated asap. Our insurance wouldnt cover testing but the place gave us a good discount. It was worth it.
  6. I dont know about the specific link but know about jason evert. He is good but very blunt. I have a few booklets by him, and it deals with issues my homeschool and private school teens have not faced since they dont date. Just to be aware.
  7. We use ecclesiastical because we attend a Latin Mass and because i like the sound of it better. My son did 2 years of church Latin while homeschooling, but he went to private school for high school. All they offered was classical, and he caught on quickly.
  8. The internet can be a wonderful thing. My problem was/is still sometimes, that It feeds my depression and especially my anxiety. There is so much info. out there, that I can begin doubting what I am doing is right or the best. This goes for homeschooling, parenting, health, etc.
  9. I love all of the pictures. I am such a visual person; it helps to see all of the ideas. I love the newsprint roll under the table and Kelly's schedule board. My main problem is my new house doesn't have much wall space in the school room, It is almost all windows. The little bit of wall space is high up or covered by book shelves. That really limits hanging items for organizing or displaying creations. Here are a few ideas of how I organize my school stuff/room.
  10. We love them as well. I hate the cheap-o ones. Just end up in the trash can. Now if we could only find a good pencil sharpner. We have gone through a ton of them, and they are all junk.
  11. I have been wondering about this program as well. I have used the Arrow and Boomerang but not this one. Rivendellmom, I did notice she lists the books that are used in the program. Maybe that would help.
  12. I learned right along with my children at the early levels, like LC I and II. Once they get to Henle, I use a live class/tutor or online class. Latin is so important, IMHO. Rather than type a long reply as to why I think so, I am linking you to my answer. Why Latin?
  13. I need some help with my almost 10 year old son. He is a very negative person, constantly complains about everything, sighs or complains when I tell him something, argues about chores and school, thinks everyone blames him, life is not fair, etc. He is no fun to be around. What works with children like this? I have tried ignoring him, having him do re-do's, punishing him, etc. It scares me a bit that something might be wrong with him as I have a 20 year old son diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
  14. I think this blog post really made a lot of sense. Kids learn a variety of ways so I think mom needs to like it...a lot. The Truth about Mom
  15. Out of my 7 dc, only 2 (girls) love to read. All 3 of my boys hate it, one girl tolerates it, and the baby (who is 8 and just picking it up on her own) claims to hate reading. They all love for me to read out loud, but for those 5, it is not an activity they choose to do on their own. I understand for beginning readers it can be frustrating to read, but it really bothers me that they don't like to read. I have read widely and extensively to these children. Anyone have any great ideas to develop more of a desire to read?
  16. I have 7 dc, and we use all cloth for napkins, dish cloths (no sponges), dish scrubbers, rags for spills, cloth diapers/wipes, no dryer sheets--wool dryer balls, cloth pads, etc. This may give you an idea of how to make them and why-- homemade household products. I usually hang my wet rags on the porch to dry so they won't stink and just toss them in the laundry with other stuff.
  17. For me, its been middle school. I have had 4 go through it, and they somehow go into this incredible funk. Raging hormones!
  18. 4 years ago, I used some of their packages. It took forever for them to ship it.
  19. Yes, every year at this time. After 17 years of doing this, I have collected quite an assortment of ideas to help. Homeschool burnout
  20. I follow bravewriter's recommendation of hitting grammar 3 x in a school lifetime. Julie recommends once in elementary, once in middle school, and once in high school.
  21. I use Brave writer. We do copywork, some French dictation, and a lot of what Julie (from Bravewriter) calls "jot it down." Basically, mom writes what child tells. You can use that for retelling Bible stories, narrations from literature that we read aloud, or science and history topics. I also jot down fun memories or stories they want to tell but aren't able to write as much as they can tell.
  22. I love Latin. My children aren't thrilled, but I think there are so many good reasons to learn. This might be helpful. Why Latin?
  23. I found a wonderful, easily made game to solidify place value. It was created by a mom who uses Math-U-See, but you don't have to use their curriculum to benefit. It works off of the decimal street principle but works much better IMO. All you need are some file folders, construction paper, and few basic supplies you will have on hand(scissors, tape, markers) Place value game
