Anyone watching "The Good Doctor"?

Recommended Posts

It's about a surgical resident with ASD.  I have found it both interesting and annoying at times.  Last night though the character had a meltdown that was so similar to my son's - complete with hitting his head over and over and tearing at his hair and lashing out.  But other things don't match our experience at all.  I'm seeing so much more of an emphasis on ASD in the media - though I don't like some of the stereotypes that seem to come out in these portrayals.

I have a love/hate relationship with that show. It's a good show, but it isn't anywhere near our experience with ASD. The most accurate portrayal I've seen (at least, the one closest in appearance to my particular Aspie) is Sheldon on BBT, and he's not even officially on the spectrum!

ETA: BBT is another of my love/hate shows. I can't stand the show itself, but I do appreciate the "quirkiness" portrayed by Sheldon as well as Amy's struggles to share a life with someone like him.

Oh see I was trying to get people to explain to me Sheldon on BBT, because the snippets I've watched with him have been SO WEIRD.

Now Doc Martin, that I really like. He's pretty much normal to me.      I think maybe The Good Doctor was on my try list and never got moved to the tried list, oops. I'm just trying to keep up with Speechless, the series on ABC where a character has CP. My ds is into Hogan's Heroes, so that has been hogging the tv, sigh.

Oh, and my personal pet peeve? I wish they'd actually have people ON THE SPECTRUM playing people on the spectrum. Would be way more fun. Then they could talk back and say no that's not what I would say. Or better yet, leave Sheldon unscripted. That would so totally crack me up. I was watching this scene (trying to try BBT) and all these people were there, going in and out. They had scripted how he was to react. I'm like dude, it would have been WAY FUNNIER if they had let the guy sleep on the set and just had the people come on and seen what had happened. More real life. Not perfect comedy, but at least real.

Apparently I'm not their market.

We watched an episode or two and may watch more. It might be too close to DH's work to be fun for him (or not), and the other doctors will probably drive me nuts. I had enough egos and cattiness in one or two episodes. I don't get along with doctors, find few of them amazing, and mostly don't need additional baggage in my head when I go to see one, lol!

Regarding the ASD, what I saw is not our scenario here (my son doesn't have prosody issues and isn't quite that literal, for instance). I think they do a good job of showing the tenacity and out-of-the-box problem-solving that some people with ASD possess while showing how they get stuck on some kinds of problem-solving as well. I do think that the character's background as portrayed in the show influences him as much as the ASD.

I watched the first three episodes and then couldn't take it anymore. I do see a few of the doctor's traits in DS (especially prosody and struggling with communicating clearly), but by the third episode it was impossible for me to suspend belief enough that Sean (is that his name?) could have made it through medical school but still be dealing with some of the things he was and lacking the understanding of some things. In one of the episodes he asked one of the female doctors something like what is sarcasm or what is the purpose of sarcasm. I know it was in the script to help the audience understand the struggles of people on the spectrum to understand things like that, but it just wasn't believable to me that he would have made it that far and not already have a pretty good grasp of sarcasm. Plus the episode where they were retrieving a liver to transplant, were so worried about keeping it cooled to the proper temperature and then hauled it out on the trunk of a car to perform surgery on it. Good grief.

I have only watched the first episode. I didn't like it enough to watch the second. Maybe I should give it another chance.

On the subject of autism being portrayed in the media--I'm grateful for it. I don't know if any of you ever watched that show Parenthood. There is a boy in the show, Max, who has Asperger's. I was so clueless about autism before watching that show, but that is how I realized my dd might be on the spectrum. About half way through binge watching the first couple of seasons about a year ago, I had the light bulb moment-- DD acts a lot like Max!  Not exactly--but lots of similarities. So that lead to her diagnosis last spring. Just in time, too, as she's hit adolescence this year and certain behaviors have worsened. I would have had no clue how to deal with her right now if not for that show. I can't imagine the mess we'd be. I'm mean, its still messy here, but at least I have some tools and resources and more understanding.

My husband and I watched Manhunt: Unabomber recently, it is streaming on Netflix. We think the FBI agent who stars in the show is on the autism spectrum. He is just clueless sometimes. He's also extremely intellectually brace and willing to hold a different opinion than everybody else.

There's no mention of it on the show, though. But I think it is played that way, he has some awkward body language and is shown talking to people without looking at them or actually facing them.

SO, I tried to let this go.

If you click your username at the top of the screen, you'll see an option to "Manage Ignore Preferences." When people bug me, that's what I do. Makes it easy to get along and have lots of opinions floating around on the board. Someone tiffs me, boom I put 'em on ignore.

I know some people are like oh I would never do that. Fine, but it's really a good thing to try. And when you do it, you can still click to reveal their posts. It's just a really good thing to try. :)

SO, I tried to let this go.

This just sounds like a massive condemnation of an ENTIRE generation of parents....one of which, if your siggie is correct, you actually are likely a part of.  I have seen the show.  The show is about a new surgical resident.  Which means, the main character isn't exactly born in the 40s.  He's probably only a few years older than your 20yr old kids.  And what it really sounds like you are implying here is that parents of 20 to 30 years ago had no respect for their kids.

That's not what you are implying, correct?

not at all. I could have worded it better, I couldn't think of a better term. I was raised in a very authoritarian household. And I have never been comfortable letting my youngest dd stay with my mom because I know her parenting philosophy and it would be bad. That is sad. Interestingly, I think my grandparents were very sensitive to their kids' (my parents') needs. No condemnation from me whatsoever, but there wasn't much discussion of these things when I was growing up. I guess what I was feeling when I watched those scenes is that high functioning autism probably frequently went undiagnosed in previous generations.  And in certain households, (not an entire generation), those kids would be more susceptible to abuse. There was less awareness--fewer resources. Does that still sound condemning? Maybe I'm over generalizing something based on my own upbringing.

I certainly didn't intend to start a parenting debate. I think I have a pretty traditional authoritative parenting style. as in--I'm not anti spanking, etc. I've just found that my normal go to forms of discipline don't work at all with dd, so I've found lots of different takes on parenting from certain blogs that use the term "respectful parenting". Their philosophies are working better with dd than say--some of the books I read as a young parent that did lean sort of authoritarian.  And I read about collaborating and partnering on Autism Discussion Page. I am learning that there's not one right way to do this parenting gig (like my mom thinks). It's hard to infer tone, but I'm certainly not feeling "holier than thou". I apologize if that's how it read.

I deleted that part of my post. I hate controversy. Pretend I never said anything. Foot in mouth disease?? Let's just go back to talking about TV. :)

Guess what! You can watch the original Korean series with english subtitles! It's actually really good even without the subtitles (no, I don't know korean), but it's way better with them.

Good Doctor - 굿 닥터 - Episode 1 - Watch Full Episodes Free on DramaFever  Here's a link to stream it for free on DramaFever. If you use amazon, you can do a free one week trial there for DramaFever and stream it for free through your Amazon Firetv or bluray player or whatever you use. The trick there is to hit the options button on the remote and turn on the subtitles. Let's just say I'm slow on the draw, because it's the end of the first episode and I only just figured it out.

The reviews are saying the original series in Korean is way better than the american remake.

I'm not sure what I think of it yet as a statement on autism. I think I missed a lot and need to rewatch this episode. I love the compassion of the mentor doctor for the young man with autism. He's so toward the Rain Man end of things, I feel really normal watching this. Sorta like when you go to a messier house and your own house seems suddenly less messy.

Thank you for this. I have been very interested in the original.

Oh my, I just spent hours watching the first three (hour long) episodes of the Korean version, and now it's so late I was dozing off and will have to rewind! Fun stuff. I laughed and cried. Crazy good. I can see why people who've seen it were disappointed with the american version. Like the american version might be fine, but the Korean one is excellent! I love the desperation he feels, the way he problem solves, all the levels of relationships (it's a very complex plot!!). His obsession with the scalpel and the way it unfolds is perfect. The scene where the girl throws it away, oh my!

Well we're into episode 9-ish (I keep falling asleep around midnight and losing track, hehe), and the Korean series is EXCELLENT! The astonishing part, for me, is seeing the cultural differences. And the portrayal of the characters, well I keep going between bawling my eyes out and laughing. More crying than laughter, really, but the funny moments are very funny. They're funny because they're so real, like yeah that's really what he would do or would like or would say, lol. So even if you don't identify with the overall presentation (autistic savant, like Rain Man), still there's a lot to identify with. The food fixations, thinking in your head, literalness, the b&w, interroception stuff. It's all here. So charming.

Actually what blows my mind is how much one of the characters likes the guy. That might be a bit idealistic. Was this based on a true story??

Ok, guess I'll try Parenthood next! I'm so devastated that The Good Doctor (korean) is over. It was a WONDERFUL series, oh my. I bawled through half of it and laughed through a lot of the rest. They hit so many important topics, but it's also just really good drama. It's a lot lighter than Doc Martin. And other than being left with the impression that Koreans do a lot of drinking (oh my) it's really clean as a whistle. Well a couple korean curse words and this really hilarious scene where Park Shi On is cursing (like imprecatory, may your... kind of cursing) when the girl was trying to egg him on to use profanity. Hilarious.

I think I may even like my doctor (only a pulmonologist, but still) better now, after watching The Good Doctor. :D
