Just spoke to VP.  I was told if I could hold off on ordering that SP History will be going on sale in a week to week and a half.  (Not that I was going to order anything.  :)  )  Anyway, She said she was not sure if you ordered during the sale if you would have to start the class at the time of order, or if they were going to let you defer start up until Sept.

JFYI

If anyone is ready to purchase the Self-Paced History Course, you can sign up here: http://curebit.com/x/ozixzO

You can defer the start date until Sept. 1, 2015, and you'll receive 1 year of access from your start date.

(This will give my family a small refund on our course we purchased.  I think Veritas Press really does care about helping homeschool families save money.)

FOR THOSE CONCERNED THAT THE VP OFFER CURRENTLY GOING ON WON'T ALLOW YOU TO DELAY THE START DATE:

I know several of you are concerned that this offer doesn't allow you to delay the start date but it is still doable if you start at the beginning of August, at least for NTGR.  I am assuming the others would be as well.  NTGR is 160 lessons (32 topics with 5 lessons each, but the 5th lesson is a test).  If your kids were willing (and my DS has been) they could double up on the last two lessons so they do a lesson then the test.  If you start at the beginning of August and do 6 lessons a week (either doubling up the 4th and 5th lesson of each section or doing a lesson on Saturday), you could still finish by Mid-March of 2016.  In fact, this is basically what we are doing right now.  And we didn't even start in August.  DS likes the lessons so much that he sometimes just goes on to the next lesson anyway.  One week he completed two full sections (10 lessons) just because he was so interested in the topics.

Thank you for sharing!  Sounds like it would work that way.  But our schedule has always been to do history 2x/week, there's no way for us to get to all our other subjects if we are doing 2 lessons of history a day.

Makes perfect sense.  DS is a huge history buff.  Two days a week wouldn't cut it for him.  But even two days a week is usually torture for DD.

Awesome!!  Now I am going back and forth... should I buy both NTAE and OTGR?  I'd start NTAE while still doing My Father's World Adventures in US History and hope to do it through the summer, then start OTGR whenever we got done.  It's easy to think, "Oh sure we'll do history through the summer - they love it!" But in reality, our summers get so busy!!  And there will be another sale next year I'm sure...

I don't know if it makes a difference in your planning, or if your acronyms just got discombobulated, but Old Testament/Ancient Egypt are one course and New Testament/Greece+Rome are the other one.

So, is OTAE first, then NTGR. :)

I had settled on BiblioPlan next year for history now I'm starting to be swayed over to this. I guess I have another week and a half to decide? I would be doing OTAE would it be to simple for a 4th and 5th grader? I planned on doing omnibus for 7th so we wouldn't finish these either. We are finishing off modern history this year and did early american history last year so ancient is really where we need to be.

It should be fine as long as you do all the reading assignments and maybe add a few extension activities. Maybe use the TM for the paper course. There are 2 book lists that go along with each course. 1 is beginner (grammar) and the other is "advanced" (logic.) I used books from both lists for my 4th grdr. Assignments are given at the end of each lesson.

NB- If you wanted to finish all 4 courses, I think it's possible to do in 2yrs with older, motivated kids and some flexibility on the reading. Basically it would mean doing 2 lessons/ day (about 1hr or a bit more in the upper level courses.) Anyway, not that you'd need to finish them all. They each stand nicely on their own IMO.

What else is needed to go along with the self-paced videos?  Any books or teacher's guide?  I've always had a hard time understanding Veritas!  Is it enough for a 7th grader or do you have to do the Omnibus year?

Als, can you buy 2 different years?  I would do part of one now and the other starting in August.

Yes you can buy 2 courses. I'm assuming you could defer the start of one of them. It *could be* enough for 7th if you do all the assigned reading (logic level) and maybe add in some writing about topics. OTAE will definitely be easy/ light for a 7th grdr.

For materials, there are the books that are assigned as reading and the timeline cards. You could also get the TM if you wanted it for extra activities.

Agree with mohini, you could buy two courses, start one now and start the next one in August/September while finishing up the first one.  I think it could be enough for 7th for certain, if you added in all the recommended readings plus maybe some additional readings and maybe some writing output.  Possibly do one research project in one area for more depth for each level.  OTAE will be light.  NTGR will be a bit more meaty.  The level after that is supposed to be meatier still.  Get the timeline cards and the TM to add in some more in-depth writing and activities.

The cards for sure. If you're not a library person the lit pack is good, but the reading schedule is listed in the course itself.

I didn't even know there was a TM, I didn't think the SP courses had one. I have not needed anything like that. I dint think the CD is necessary either.

Purchased through your link. I had some other items already in my cart, so hopefully you will get credit  :001_smile:
