  1. You can use it for all the kids but it would be hard to use it together at the same time. It is a series of videos broken up by multiple choice questions and games. Only one child can play the games at a time (which in my house would lead to a big problem ;-) ). It's not really a program you can just sit down and watch/listen to together. It's designed to be interactive with the student. There are meant to be 5 lessons a week. The new card is introduced on Monday. The material is taught Tues-Thursday and every Friday is a quiz on the card. The lessons vary quite a bit in length (with Fri being the shortest as it is only the quiz) but are generally 15-20 minutes. It would be almost impossible to use the program to study only specific things as the games review all the previous material and usually do not let you go on until you've played them.
  2. Have you looked at Veritas Press Self paced history? It's done totally independently and my kids really like it. Pricey though for lots of kiddos...
  3. We needed more review and my daughter HATES comic books. In hind site I knew from the get go that BA wasn't going to work, but this forum is constantly reaffirming the "AOPS is the only math curriculum for serious math students" prerogative so we gave it a try...
  4. It seems like a great curriculum but every time I look at it, I put it back. It seems like it must take hours a day to complete. Can anyone describe your use of Apologia, not wether you like it or not but the time commitment and/or how you set up your schedule using it? I'm using it with a 6th grader and a 3rd grader. The 3rd grader is extremely behind in his writing abilities but I did get him the junior note booking journal. An example is day 1 schedule; Read textbook pages 19-22 (which then has you end in the middle of a section) and narrate (I see lots of technical terms and I'm not sure how they would narrate through the difficult processes they are describing. My kids are good at narrating stories but those have a much more clearly defined plot with added details that can be eliminated without compromising the important details. Then the kids are supposed to fill out two pages in the note booking journal. Then do an experiment. Then read two more pages and narrate. And finally do another experiment. Knowing my kids this equals approximately 4 hours of work! This seems like a ridiculous time expenditure for science.
  5. Beginning Word Roots might be nice before but you don't need anything before visual Latin.
  6. I've realized with my older kids that I severely underestimated the amount of "language arts" they need. I'd appreciate any advice on the following plan for my 3rd grader :-) Math: CLE 300 Science: BJU 3rd grade DLO History: VP New Testament Greece and Rome Reading: CLE Reading 300 Language Arts: (I know most of these are not at the 3rd grade level but when I did the placement tests this is where he placed) Spelling you See B (Jack and Jill) Daily 6-trait Writing (1st grade) Langauge Smarts B A Reason for Handwriting B He also listens to family read-alouds and plays football and lacrosse and wrestles.
  7. It was too light for what we wanted/our children's learning style.
  8. I have the journal and tried to use it as an independent science curriculum. A few things I noticed were that the pages repeate every 7-9 pages (I don't remember the exact number), one of the pages encourages children to watch a video about the subject (which I had to find and preview ahead of time), and all the journals are the same. I also had some issues that were probably unique to the specific child I tried to use it with (10 year old boy, VERY behind in reading) that caused me to stop using it altogether. I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but hopefully it helps a little.
  9. My DD just finished it and loved it as part of the VP literature for 5th grade. She's 9 and not the strongest reader, but proficient. I would recommend the version they use.
  10. I can not seem to find our rhythm with science. I HATE experiments and my kids do also. We spend a lot of time at the local science center doing lots of hands on things so we all feel that the experiments are a waste of time. Anyway... since we can't find something that doesn't include experiments (and works for us) we have decided to go back to Apologia. It will just be my 6th grade DD doing it and I have a few questions for those of you who have used this program; 1.) Can a sixth grader read the text on their own? 2.) Does the note booking journal include a 2 day schedule? 3.) How many weeks is the note booking journal scheduled for? 4.) If you follow the 2 day a week schedule, how long does a lesson take you? 5.) Do you feel the note booking journal or any of the lap books allow the students to work independently?
  11. We use CLE LAs with IEW American History Writting Lessons and it's a wonderful combo! We do LAs three days a week and IEW two days a week.
  12. If you have a child that can write from their head but just needs a little direction on how to organize written papers the CLE is fine. It teaches how to setup a proper paragraph, essay, and research paper. It also goes over outlining and some poetry/creative writing. If your child is writing adverse or cries when presented with any written assignment you will need to add more writing to CLE. We use CLE LAs with IEW.
  13. I've used both and I like both. I would say that IEW is more formulaic and works well with kids who need a lot of direction in how to write. CAP W&R would apply well to kids who are willing to write but could use some help sharpening their skills and thinking more creatively.
  14. I have one that it takes a solid hour for also. We slog through. I don't ever cross out problems as I feel she would miss to much. Perhaps doing half the problems in the morning and half in the afternoon would help it not feel so tedious???
  15. Have you looked at Editor in Cheif? If all your looking for is something to bolster her language mechanics score that will fit the bill and appeals to a lot of STEM kids... That said I love both R&S and CLE!! If you don't need handwriting/spelling though, I would go with R&S done orally.
  16. I agree with Bree. We just started it this year. We did the placement test and started where it said. The transition has been very smooth and my 4th and 6th grader do it completely independently.
  17. I've used all their historical fiction as recommended with their history course. Some of their books are less accurate some more. They have such a huge range of choices that without specific books it would be hard to classify them! That said we have really enjoyed most of their books. HTH!!
  18. We did Middle Ages, Ren., and Ref. VP SP last year. There is nothing gentle about that period in history and I don't think VP whitewashes the topics at all. My guess is that it would be too difficult for her emotionally.
  19. Those look amazing! Something my 10 year old boy could really use. I couldn't find a price??? And I hope they come out with the boy one soon.
  20. You could defiantly do ECC! I would just make sure you add the 2/3rd grade supplement.
  21. My DD has been doing great with CLE math until recently. She was scoring 80% on daily work and 95-100% on test. Now these last two light units of 5th grade there is definitely a decline in her work. Her scores are closer to 60-70% on daily work and 80-85% on tests. I've been working with her and don't feel like there are any large gaps just lots of small mistakes that didn't used to be there. I know these scores aren't terrible so we probably could just "push through", but I'm wondering if a switch might help??? She HATES discovery math. She will tell you beast academy was the worst thing I ever made her do! So what other options are out there? We tried taking some time off but that didn't seem to help.
  22. If it's something the kids are going to write in I buy the paperback bound ones and then have the binding cut off and have them spiral bound so they lay flat. If it's a teachers manual I usually buy the eBook.
  23. GSWL = Getting Started with Latin It's just one book, non consumable. There are not any workbooks or teachers manuals so it's very affordable.
  24. My 10 year old 4th grader will also be starting CLE 2nd grade LA. I have been using CLE for my other two children so I feel confident this is the best place for him. I don't think you need to do LTR with your younger son if he is already reading well. While LTR and LA1 integrate well, you do not need to use them together.
  25. With kids that age you could easily do one lesson a day and move through the books quickly. However you could also probably skip to Narrative 1 if you needed to.
