Homeschoolmom3 Posted January 30, 2015 Share Posted January 30, 2015 So, I am contemplating my oldest son's HS plan and even though I know things might change I am trying to get a good solid plan underway. I am debating as to let him go ahead and take college classes or continue on with classes I can come up with on my own and outsourcing subjects through other online providers like AP classes etc. Love to see those who have gone before me and what you all have done. He is several grades ahead in most all subjects, and has taken most HS classes so am looking for things to fill in his requirements for graduation. Also, trying to determine credits for college courses and HS credit on transcript. Read the past forums leaving my head swirling! I know that for instance HS you should have 4 science, math, history, and english but if you take some at the college can one college class replace one year of English say in HS? mom31257 Posted January 30, 2015 Share Posted January 30, 2015 I would check into the local colleges and see when he is allowed to enter. In our area, the student has to be 16. You could do online and/or AP classes until he's old enough to be accepted. Our state pays the tuition for dual enrollment students, even homeschooled. It will cover up to 5 classes per semester. Our dd didn't do any high school credits before high school, so I don't think listing her classes would be much help. We chose for her to wait until this her senior year for dual enrollment. I would also look at the colleges you know he would be interested in and make sure you cover all of their requirements for entrance. Even if he did high school level classes in middle school, some states won't allow you to give credit for those. You'd have to replicate them in a higher form in high school. Our CC said they would allow him to start this year (he met all requirements) but I waited not wanting him to start quite so early. I did list month/year completion dates for each course, but the treanscript was organized by subject. I followed the guidelines for our district regarding how to award credit for DE classes. The basic rule was that, if the college class replaced a high school class that was normally half a credit, then the college class earned half a credit. Another college class that met for the same number of hours but replaced a high school course that normally earned a full credit earned a full credit. It's kind of a silly system, but itvwas spelled out for me in the agreement we signed when he dual enrolled. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Melissa B Posted January 30, 2015 Share Posted January 30, 2015 My dd started DE as a 9th grader, so she will have all college classes on her high school transcript. She took high school level classes during junior high, but I will leave them off the transcript since they were taken before 9th grade and she doesn't need the credits. As far as how much credit she will get for each college class - our state has preset credit determinations for every college class. We abide by the list so that our transcript will match all the other DE transcripts in the state. I have her transcript classes listed by subject and by course number, for example: Foreign Language LAT 1120 Latin 1 1 (grade) LAT 1121 Latin 2 1 (grade) Social Sciences AMH 2010 US History 1 .5 (grade) AMH 2020 US History 2 .5 (grade) Most foreign language, math and science with labs are worth 1 credit each. All high school level classes were on it including Alg 1,2 that were taken prior to high school. I explained that in the school profile. Here is an example of something like we did. We homeschool year round and many of our subjects just wouldn't honestly fit if we listed by school year. Also some of our courses like Art Appreciation involved all four years. So I think this works well if you have Math (6 credits) Grade Credit Algebra 1 A 1 Algebra 2 A 1 Geometry. A 1 Precalculus. A. 1 AP Calculus A. 1 Hope this was helpful. Homeschoolmom3 Posted January 30, 2015 Author Share Posted January 30, 2015 We are in the state of VA, and I spoke with our homeschool rep for our state and she informed me that any HS level class taken prior to 9th grade should be put on the transcript under the 9th grade year with an astrick on the bottom stating that it was taken earlier as in 7th or 8th grade. They also are included for the necessary credits of HS. Yeah, this is what I thought but wanted to let everyone else know my find....HTH someone else! Thanks again everyone! Perhaps you should talk to the person in charge of dual enrollment at the college you would use. Maybe the high schools count it that way because of time in class and their funding. For example, a 100-level 3 credit hour class is really not equal to a full high school course many times (depending on the high school and the CC, of course.) Our local public school determines credit on a course by course basis. For example, comp 101 is 1/2 credit, physics with a lab is 1 credit. It doesn't matter so much now, due to knowing that I now I can count all of the HS classes my son took in MS as part of the overall credit numbers we will be okay. :) Thanks for your comment! I went in with a general plan for those 4 years, but I could not plan the details out more than 6 months in advance because I didn't know what options would be available the following year. Sometimes a great class would pop up and we would ditch our previous plans to take advantage of them. Or, we were working with a few other families to co op history or English and we would have to come to some agreement about what we wanted to focus on for the year. I wish I had known that with my two olders. For reasons that I don't quite understand, this is absolutely transforming my expectations for my third, who's finishing eighth grade. Suddenly I feel free to think, "What exactly do I want him to have accomplished by the time he finishes high school? How can we be working on that now?" instead of, "What courses should he be doing this year?" So, instead of thinking, "What should we do for literature in the fall?" I've been thinking things like, "Hey, it seems like we could read a Shakespeare play together as a family a couple of times a year. And he could do X, Y, and Z with poetry. And we'll need to choose some good books for him to read and talk about." And instead of thinking, "What period of history should he study in the fall?" I'm thinking, "What stack of books can I propose for him, that he can choose from next? And how long should it take him to read it? What should I do to be sure that he's learning? I feel that somehow I'm freed to see learning as a more organic part of our family life, at the same time that I feel freed to let him have more input into his learning. Since this is a very important point to him, I'm simply thrilled. I'm not quite sure why this concept has freed me so much, but I've just felt tied to the transcript for some years now—especially since filling out my oldest daughter's National Merit application, which was so structured—but even though #3 will probably need a NM application filled out as well, I'm not going to worry about that now. There will be an honest way to fit what we're doing into that structure, even if what we're doing is atypical, as long as it's a serious program of study.
