Heather in Neverland
My ds wants these DVDs for his birthday. Is it worth it to put out the extra money for the extended editions?
HRAAB
IMO, absolutely, but I'm extremely biased. They are my therapy after a bad day. Janet

Kay in Cal
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!! As a fan, the extended editions have so much more content, are truer to the books. There is a significant amount of stuff that got cut for the theatrical releases, hours of material that is really wonderful and watchable, but they just though audiences wouldn't sit still for 3 1/2 hours. Not a problem at home! Of course, I obviously don't feel very strongly about this...;)

RenayofRohan
Absolutely worth it. You won't regret it. The extra material adds so much to the story and sitting through them is a delight. :001_smile: We recently hooked up my MIL with our extended version DVD's and now she's a big fan. Carol in Cal.
The Director's Cut ones are stunningly better than the released ones. More material, better flow, more true to the books, more entertaining, more literary, for want of a better term. I loved the theater versions (and I never seem to like movies of my favorite books, so that is high praise!) but the extended versions are dramatically better. pooh bear
Yes they are worth it. DO NOT buy the blu-ray discs of the movies. They have yet to put the extended onto blu-ray. Why, oh why are the extended not yet on blu-ray?
Karenciavo
Another yes. It's worth it for the Mouth of Sauron and deeper look into Faramir alone. There are other tidbits too (the Witch King's death scene.) Love it!
Remudamom
Absolutely, the scene of the elves walking through the forest was enough for me. Loved it.
AuntieM
Yes, the extended releases do a much better job of developing the character of Faramir (one of the most honorable characters in the trilogy, IMO). In the original releases I didn't mind most of the changes they made, but one thing that bugged me was what they did to Faramir's character. The extended versions give more explanation to his relationship with Eowyn as well. Generally speaking, why get less Tolkien when you can easily get more?
