Symptom of Covid or something else

DD tested + Thursday and - today.

Yesterday and today as soon as she eats, she gets fatigue so extreme she pretty much passes out from exhaustion. After having a 60-90 minute nap she wakes up and feels fine.

Any ideas what might be going on with that?

I think this kind of intense fatigue is pretty common post-Covid. Keep an eye that it’s resolving and not worsening and don’t let her exercise too much. Possibly consider checking iron levels as there was some info on the Covid thread about that recently.

Do you have a way to check her O2 etc? The only other thing is when you say “as soon as she eats” - she doesn’t have any blood sugar issues usually? We do know one person who developed diabetes after Covid

This is commonly described among long haulers, but that doesn't mean she's headed for long covid given that she is hardly out of the acute phase. It may just be a symptom for her while she is still in recovery. Digestion takes a lot of energy, so it may just be that the work of digestion is just a lot for her body right now. Sometimes people with post Covid POTS experience this, while many others feel it has to do with histamine and improve with antihistamines and/or a low histamine diet. Does she have any heart symptoms after eating? Rapid or pounding heartbeat? Might be interesting to check blood pressure right after a meal.

Whatever the case, it's clear her body needs a LOT of rest right now. If she can make resting her full time job right now, that's what I would do. I'm sorry she's having a rough recovery and hope she feels 100% soon.

Thanks ladies.

Unfortunately, today is her last day of reading week, so she won't get as much rest as we'd like for her to get. She is also 1800 mi/2900 km away, living in the dorms at university, so not nearby for us to help in any meaningful way. Amazon Prime shipping takes a week or more, so she'd have to attend a medical facility to test or monitor O2 or sugar levels, IF they would do it.

She does not normally have blood sugar issues. Fatigue is not outside her realm of "normal". However, extreme sleepiness fatigue that hits like a brick within moments of eating is new. Hopefully it's just a symptom that will be gone in a few days. She may have to try to fast until after classes are done for the day this week.

It sounds a lot like reactive hypoglycemia, which is often worse after carb-heavy foods, especially when they are eaten alone or without enough protein first. However,  each person's triggers will vary. A food diary that tracks what she eats and in what order might help her to see if there's any pattern.

Lousy timing for her, poor kid! On the silver lining side, fasting is something there’s actually been a fair amount of data to support being something that improves Covid outcomes. Some people with long Covid have found it to be one of the things that helps them feel better as well. I feel uneasy about fasting personally (maybe because I feel terrible without food), but if she’s not having blood sugar issues and isn’t someone who feels terrible to skip breakfast, maybe it will work out. I’d probably recommend she has a quick energy source in her bag in case she finds she’s starting to feel bad without food. I hope her days are short and don’t involve much walking. Hopefully today is better for her!

Covid can drop b1, zinc, and iron. Low iron would cause the fatigue and also results in lower thyroid, irregular heart rate, etc. She can eat for the iron or try an iron supplement. Does her b12 run low? It's necessary for absorption of the iron, as well as copper. You can take b12 sublingually and a food source of iron (liver or liver pills) will bring the copper, etc. for absorption.

Thanks for checking. Yes and no; she seems to be over experiencing the immediate fatigue with eating. But she has spent more time being ill, or experiencing symptoms of some sort,  than not since September. Now she has stomach pains after eating, which is the return of a symptom from a couple months ago that had cleared up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She does supplement b12, iron, d and magnesium.

Sometimes fomotadine (Pepcid) is very helpful with this symptom. Unless it’s contraindicated for her, it’s an easy one to try and usually works quickly if it’s going to.
