Melissa Louise
Weird question, but is irrationality, emotional lability a symptom of advanced KD? (Ex, dialysis, frail, noting changes to baseline irrationality/emotional instability.) Thanks.
Rosie_0801
Not a doctor, but it seems a likely result of what amounts to poisoning, and the discomfort would be enough to eradicate anyone's patience and tolerance.
prairiewindmomma
Yup. Expect increased depression, decreased executive functioning, and a bunch of other cognitive decline also. Sending safe and well wishes to you….hugs.
Faith-manor
Yes, high ammonia levels cause altered mental status. We deal with this with.mil from time to time.

Jean in Newcastle
You don't have to answer this, but is his kidney disease a result of not-well-controlled diabetes? If his sugars are still out of control that too can contribute to a sort of dementia.
Melissa Louise
No diabetes. The alcohol isn't helping though. I'm so de-sensitized to that but typing and thinking co-morbidities, the KD might even be a secondary cause. Or additive.

Basically anything that keeps toxins floating around the body, whether it's because the kidneys don't work well to flush them out or the liver is not filtering them out or bloodsugars are out of whack, all will contribute to confusion, mood swings and other indications that the brain has been affected. 1

scholastica
I just want to say how sorry I am for all you’ve been through and are dealing with. You are an incredibly strong, resilient and deeply good person. You’ve fought for your kids and your own dignity and done it with grace. Hoping for better days ahead.
