I forgot what I had on the menu tonight and started split peas soaking this morning for split pea soup tonight. Then I realized that was supposed  to be for tomorrow night and I have some leftovers That need used up tonight. Will it hurt the split peas to soak until tomorrow evening?

When I over soak my split peas the water had a fermented smell. So I would drain out the water later in your scenario.

I wondered about that. I was planning to put them in the refrigerator when I got home.

Tonight, I’d just make the soup and save it for tomorrow.

As an FYI next time, there’s no need to pre soak split peas for soup. They break down quickly enough.

This. I make my split pea soup in the crockpot and have never soaked the peas first.
