Rhonda in TX
My DH is gone every Tuesday night for orchestra rehearsal (goes straight from work). He has a different rehearsal on Monday night, but he is able to come home first. However, he does not like eating a big meal before a rehearsal, so he just makes himself a light dinner. He doesn't understand why I don't like cooking a "big" meal if he's not going to be there to eat it. When it's just me and the two kids, I don't like going to all that effort. We usually make/order pizza, or I might make homemade chicken strips. I'm not going to cook a casserole, make spaghetti, etc. I think that part of this is that he was an only child and his dad is a very picky eater. His mom basically made two separate meals the entire time DH grew up. (not gonna happen here!) Am I unusual? What do you do?
Ria
My dh takes classes at seminary every Monday night; he goes straight from work and doesn't get home until after 10 pm. Yes, I cook a regular dinner. I still have four boys at home, plus myself. Ria
mellifera
I tend to cook a meal, but it may be something that the kids and I enjoy and he wouldn't.
Soph the vet
Less chance there will be meat in the meal if DH is not here. The kids love club crackers, PB, apples and yogurt. Works for me.
Country Girl
Nope, I don't cook a regular meal. We usually eat leftovers or something really easy like pancakes. I look at having a night off of cooking as the silver lining for my husband not being home.
Happy
My dh is a pilot and so is often not home. When both boys were at home, I'd cook. Now, mister picky fixes what he wants and I fix what I want. :D Oh, the joys of older kids who can fend for themselves.
Emmy
I fix my kids something to eat but no I don't prepare a big meal.

Jenny in Florida
Before my daughter went away to school, I'd usually cook something a bit more elaborate when my husband wasn't around. These days, though, if it's just my son and me, the odds are pretty good that we'll each just fend for ourselves or that I will do something very simple for him. In our case, it's not my husband who misses meals, though, by my son (and, by extension, me). He has classes and rehearsals that keep us out at dinner time at least two nights a week. TN Mama
It depends. My husband is away for the next year and so while I won't cook as I normally would, I will still make some of our normal meals. We'll definitely eat breakfast for supper at least once a week though! :) Something we don't normally do when he's home. My girls are only 6 and 7 and so I have to make something that we can eat leftovers of or freeze for later.
KatieJ
When I had all the kiddoes growing up here, if DH was not going to be home, I cooked, but it was not a meat and potatoes or casserole, More like Mac N cheese, grilled cheese, or eggs and toast. Now that it's two for tea most of the time around here, I don't cook the way I did when I was cooking for a household of 6 either. We tend to eat lighter, soup and a sandwich or a big salad. DH is really fine with it!
ThelmaLou
My husband takes dinner leftovers to work for lunch each day, so if I have enough leftovers for his lunch, then I won't cook if he's not going to be home for dinner. I'll give the kids mac and cheese, pizza rolls, etc.
Titus.Two.Five
Well, my husband is only home on Saturday and Sunday for dinner. So, yes, I do cook even though he is not here. However, if he were usually home and only gone once per week such as your Dh, no I would take the night off opting for easy! :001_smile:
kewb
I'm supposed to cook a meal when he is home?!? There is always something for dinner if he is home or not. A full out well balanced meal happens once or twice a week. I am happy having chips and salsa for dinner.
TraceyS/FL
Nope. OK, rarely...... only if i started it before he wasn't going to be home! LOL!!
WTMindy
Heck no!! If dh isn't here, we just eat something simple for dinner!!
Rhonda in TX
It sounds like there's a wide variety, but my practices are not that unusual. Thanks!
tricia
Normally I don't go all out even though I still have a gaggle of children to feed. So it is normally something very easy that I can get away with. Pancakes, waffles, or maybe even popcorn with peanut butter. :001_smile:
