jak of in
I am thinking about getting a convertible sofa, like a futon or something similar, which would be a seating area in that room most of the time, but converts to a bed. A daybed would work, but wouldn't be as comfortable to just sit on (for me, at least....I'm short!) Anyone have a recommendation for a futon that is comfortable to sleep on? I only expect my son (27ds..200+ lb) to sleep on it a few nights a year, but I still want it to be comfortable for him. And it needs to be reasonably priced, maybe under $400. The room is small and we have made it into a storage room and office, but still want to put a bed in there, too. Thanks!
Carol in Cal.
I saw a really comfortable convertible daybed at Cost Plus World Market a year ago or so. I think it would be perfect. I can't cut and paste right now, but it's called a Studio Day Sofa, and it feels really good to sit on. You can flip one side down to make it a chaise, and both to make it a bed. It's more convincing as a couch than any daybed I've ever seen.
Guest
If I had it to do over, I would get to REI and buy their luxury camping cot. It's really nice. And you stow it.
dsmith
If you get a futon, make sure it has support legs in the center. Our's didn't have that and began to sag in the center and eventually broke. It was a heavy metal frame rated for 300 lbs. We got a year out of it. It did get a lot of use, though.
Wilma
Would a Murphy Bed be a good solution?
TechWife
Make sure it will fit through the door! I just sold our futon and will be replacing it with this airbed: https://www.costco.com/AeroBed-Opti-comfort-Queen-Air-Mattress-with-Headboard.product.100170103.html We only have guests a few times each year, so I think this will work out fine. The futon took up too much room.

The futon took up too much room. I have a queen bed in our "guest room" but no one we have as guests can do the stairs anymore, so it's sort of pointless. I'm keeping it...for now. But I have 2 airbeds, singles, that get used from time to time. They are pretty comfortable, but that cot at REI was better. But I've got the airbeds so, I'm not spending the extra money. I know some people love futons, but I am not one of them. Worst night's sleep ever at my mom's old guest room. I actually checked into a hotel for the remainder of the stay. :::scowl::: :0) ETA LINK: https://www.rei.com/product/892837/rei-co-op-kingdom-cot-3?CAWELAID=120217890000792434&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=30320809120&CATCI=pla-284455405113&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C404_33951%7C8928370001%7Cnone%7Cf3005112-80ea-4ca9-9ee3-c920f18eb7c6%7Cpla-284455405113&lsft=cm_mmc:PLA_Google_LIA%7C404_33951%7C8928370001%7Cnone%7Cf3005112-80ea-4ca9-9ee3-c920f18eb7c6%7Cpla-284455405113&gclid=Cj0KCQjwierMBRCHARIsAHl9i4FQ6A6_0COnl4OQjIl23W5QNpIF5jkIjx90P2WQANPHZ9SX0lHcKb8aAiGxEALw_wcB
TX Native
I bought a twin platform frame off Amazon that just sits up a few inches off the ground (lower than a daybed). I backed it against the wall with a body pillow, a couple standard pillows with shams, and a few decorative pillows so I don't sit back too far and still have some back support when I sit on it. The platform bed brand name is Zinus. ETA: It cost about $100 and we already had the twin mattress. nevergiveup
We have a couple of sofas that are sleeper sofas and are comfortable. You could always get a memory foam topper to make it even more comfortable. I think sofas are more versatile than daybeds.
MommyLiberty5013
There is a large arm chair (seats two tightly) but it transforms into a twin bed. We have one of those. I think we paid $500 for it brand new. It's gotten lots of use.
jak of in
Thanks for the suggestions! All of them sound like good options. Ah...decisions, decisions!
J-rap
We love our "clack clack." I found this blog which tells about them. They seem to generally be between $250 and $500. http://click-clack-sofas.blogspot.com/2013/05/click-clack-sofa-with-storage.html Also, I think it's more comfortable than a futon! heartlikealion
We own this. Purchased on another site but don't see it on the site. I don't love it as a couch because the way our frame is, it doesn't lay at a 90 angle. But it's very plush and we got it for similar reasons. We have had guests sleep on it. They seemed happy with it. I have sat on much thinner ones before. This one comes to your door in a box vacuum sealed. You open it and it grows lol. At least, when we ordered ours. https://jet.com/product/detail/ede37d0ab9af414eac37c9ae9aa034bf?jcmp=pla:ggl:NJ_dur_Gen_Furniture_a1:Furniture_Mattresses_Box_Springs_Futon_Mattresses_a1:na:PLA_785111644_40612356946_pla-307114847991:na:na:na:2&code=PLA15&pid=kenshoo_int&c=785111644&is_retargeting=true&clickid=0000a9a9-9fff-434a-8796-f802285c63b1But we got it with the intention of replacing our old queen. I had a queen futon frame already. Normally futons come in full size.
Karen Palmer
Add a mattress topper to you futon. Slip your mattress topper inside the futon cover, or layer it on top of the mattress, and cover both the futon mattress and the topper with a fitted sheet to hold everything together.
