Chelle in MO
He has been to our pediatrician about it, and my dermatologist doesn't have an opening until the end of February! It started a couple of months ago. It's just reddish, not bumpy or itchy. The ped said to stop deo for a couple of weeks, then it should be fine to go back to the same deo (Old Spice solid). Ds stopped for 3-4 weeks, then we decided to have him try some kind of Dove non-irritating solid instead of going back to the same. He broke out right away. Any thoughts? Questions? Could it be yeast? I don't know where to go next. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Guest submarines
DH has rashes with certain deos. Are you sure it is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant? I vaguely remember reading that for all the Dove commercials for being so pure and non-irritating, it is mostly their image. I'd try a natural / organic deodorant? Chelle in MO
Hmmm...good thoughts. I think the new and the old are both antiperspirant and deodorant. Thanks for the input!
hornblower
so i'm guessing the doc thought contact dermatitis. is it just one side though? that's a bit weird for contact dermatits & might make me think fungal infection too - but otoh, a doc should be able to see that straight off.... & it went away completely when he didn't use the product? he could be allergic or sensitive to many ingredients but from my reading it's the scents themselves that are frequently the problem, and natural scents are not much use because tons of people are allergic to natural scent. It's possible I guess that he's allergic to the aluminum chloride (which is the difference between an anti perspirant and a deodorant) but honestly, I'd think it was scents & other ingredients. if it were my kid, I'd hit it with a topical otc low dose hydrocortisone in the mornings and an antifungal in the evenings and keep trying different brands of anti perspirant. I'm fond of Certain Dri & Tom's of Maine (they make an anti perspirant now in addition to their deodorants) because both brands are not tested on animals... texasmama
Dove gives my ds12 a rash. He can tolerate Mitchum unscented. Even Tom's bothered him. Make sure whatever you try is unscented.
shawthorne44
I've had that problem off and on. Sometimes I can use something for a long time, and then *poof* I am very allergic to it. Also sometimes it is due to a lot of sweat, like a house project. I do basically what the doc said. I go without and keep the area clean and dry. Sometimes at night I'll put a little thin soft non-terrycloth towel in my underarm, and that helps. One application of Gold Bond seems to help but it really burns for a few minutes. Some ice sometimes helps too. But, throw out anything that causes a rash.
Chelle in MO
Thanks, everyone! Great ideas to consider! Yes, hornblower, doc thinks it's contact derm. I forgot that. It's both sides. And it *almost* totally went away, but took longer than the 2 wks the doc recommended waiting. Arctic Mama, it has itched very little. Just a couple of times--usually when it first starts. Just tonight he showed me a new rash! It's on the left side of his mid-back. What in the world? It's little dots, though. Not like the underarm rash. And it's not itchy. Chelle in MO
Prickly heat? That sounds reasonable for the rash on his back, except that it's not itchy. Thanks! I'll see how it looks over the next day or two.
EmilyGF
I'm allergic to all antiperspirants. They don't give me itchy rashes, though, they give me small, painful bumps. They go away after a week or so. Quitting antiperspirant was key. ETA: Apparently this is really common because it took the specialist surgeon all of 30 seconds to correctly diagnose me. fraidycat
I've read good things about magnesium oil or milk of magnesia being a good deodorant. I've also read that most of us are mag deficient and can absorb the supplement through our skin quite well, so hey - you can hit two birds with one stone! :)

Jasperstone
It could be candida coming through the skin. You may need to treat it internally.
Deee
Its not the end of the world if he can't wear deodorant - I can't and I live in a hot, humid country. He'll just have to wash more. I know that this is hard cos also have a teenage boy. On the plus side, he'll have to wash more (my house is frequently filled with the pungent aroma of teenagers: sweat and deodorant mixed, then warmed for a while and allow to ferment. Some of them really need to wash more!) Treat the rash with both hydrocortisone and an antifungal, as suggested previously, introduce him to the soap, ride him till washing becomes a habit (may take some time.....), and leave it at that. Laura Corin
For a while I could only use body shop aloe vera roll-on, or the same thing would happen to me. Now I can use other brands so long as they have no alcohol.
Chelle in MO
Thanks, everyone! You've given me good stuff to think about/try! (heartlikealion, he doesn't wear a shirt to bed.)
