caitlinsmom
Gyros are on the menu tonight. I've found a couple online that sound good but I want to "know" someone who loves it because dh hasn't had the best experiences in the past. lol Does anyone have a recipe they love and will share? :)
bethben
We like this one a lot: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/traditional-gyro-meat/ I do bake the whole thing and then slice it thin and fry it. It just tastes a little better that way. For the sauce, I do 8 oz yogurt, 8 oz creamy cucumber salad dressing, and 1 cucumber peeled and finely chopped. It's not the same as the gyro place down the road, but it's pretty close. Beth
umsami
We use our Showtime Rotisserie grill… and then slowly slice it off as it cooks. It's not the same, but it's good. We buy a piece of meat (I think it's top roast?) at Target…. freeze it for 20 minutes….slice thin….then marinade in onions, flat leaf parsley, a little vinegar, lemon juice, and schwarma spices (pre made mix I buy at the Arabic store). For the sauce….Greek yogurt, 3-4 cloves garlic minced, 1/2 English cucumber chopped fine, a little salt, and maybe 1 T of olive oil.
Snickerdoodle
Beth, I'm going to try that recipe. Do you cook it with sliced pineapple on top?
Ottakee
I wish my family would eat them. They don't so I end up just buying an over priced kit in the grocery store once in a while and making them for myself one at a time.
Bambam
I like the recipe bethben posted, but it is a lot of work, so I typically use this recipe http://allrecipes.com/recipe/gyros-burgers/ For the sauce http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Tzatziki-Sauce-I/Detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=tzatiki%20sauce&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Recipe&soid=sr_results_p1i3
elfgivas
we just cook lamb, and put it in the pita with tsatziki. no spices, because i use left overs for other things. recipes: tsatziki: http://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/tzatziki-sauce/ pita: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2009/03/pita-bread/ hth, ann

Beth it just dawned on me that i could use ground meatless meat with the spices for a vegetarian version. has anyone tried that? we are tending towards a vegetarian diet that doesn't use meat substitute, but we tried morning star sausages last weekend, and are looking for more things that tasty! ann
Prairie~Phlox
I love gyros, I may have to try some of these. I just need to get ground lamb.

Slartibartfast
I like to take this recipe and serve it like gyro meat even though that isn't really what it is. It just tastes good. It uses beef sirloin, cheaper than lamb. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/spicy-beef-kebabs-recipe.html
