Alicia64
My boys are ten. I'd love to find a video of his speech, a craft or two would be great. Do you know of an appropriate-for-kids documentary on MLK? Any ideas welcome! Thank you! Alley
Ali in OR
We watched the I Have a Dream speech on Youtube when we last studied him. Worth doing.
LucyStoner
My son is 10. We are watching Eyes on the Prize, an episode a day. It's great and puts MLK in the larger context of the Civil Rights movement, which I appreciate.
Elfknitter.#
I thought we could watch this weston wood video of the book Martin's Big Words as a lead in to his speech: http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=77151 Lucy- from where are you watching Eyes on the Prize? Is it streaming somewhere?
Soror
I picked up 3 videos from the library, 2 on the civil rights movement and one specifically on MLK. They were kids news movies. Last week we read Sister Anne's Hands and that is always a great intro into civil rights told at a child's level.
Alicia64
I looked up Eyes on the Prize which sounded interesting to me. But Common Sense Media says it's for 14 and older: "Parents need to know that this powerful documentary depicts real-life racial violence, cruelty, bigotry, and name-calling." http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/eyes-on-the-prize Alley

Kerileanne99
For a quick look, review, or summarization for the unit BrainPop and BP, Jr. Have the clip. In fact, although we have subscriptions I did notice they are the free videos this week.

mytwomonkeys
I'm getting ready to preview it for my son (almost 10). I'm sure it is heavy content, but it was originally a made for TV movie (from what I googled anyway), so I'm *thinking* it will be okay. I'll post back after I've gone through it :)

mytwomonkeys
the movie was very good. definitely racial slurs and hate speech, but all within the context of the story line and necessary imho. very good. i would feel comfortable with my son watching it & he is sensitive. great for launching off discussions and further research into other people that contributed to the civil rights movement, organizations, laws, etc.
Soror
I just seen one on youtube will looking up I Have a Dream speech, it is - animated 1hr long, seems well done but I've not watched it and we've got enough to watch here from the library. eta: here is the imdb on Our Friend, Martin We just watched the Weston Woods video, March On, The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World. It is supposed to go with the book of the same title but I didn't see it in the library(I was in a hurry though). It is told from MLK's sister pov and goes mostly over his preparation of the I Have a Dream speech. I thought it was good, especially for my age group here. We then watched a short version of the speech and it provided some great talking points. The other videos I got were ABC News Classroom Edition: The Civil Rights Movement- there are 2 videos. I had planned on studying it just for today but we might spread it all week.
theYoungerMrsWarde
I actually wrote up a lesson plan for a group blog. Here's the link. There's book recommendations, the Dream speech video, BrainPOP video, a coloring page and an activity.

Alicia64
Sorry. They were all free yesterday :(. I didn't think to check them again before sharing today. Hi Again My Two Monkeys! Do you actually use the lapbooks from A Journey Through Learning? They look really good. I'd like to start with Laura Ingalls Little House in the Big Woods. Do you do a download? I only have a b/w printer so nothing would come out in color. Does that work for your kids or do they want color lapbooks? Alley

The city library didn't have it (which irked me) but the county did and the university did.

I come from a mixed race family and we were targeted by a hate group when I was a pretty little kid so my parents didn't have the privilege of shielding up from it until we were older.
