I worked up to 8 miles carrying 50 pounds on my back. I worked out with weights. If I were to do it again (which I don't plan to!) I would definitely work on upper body strength. I would think being strong enough to do a chin-up would have put me in a better place. Honestly, though, my success was highly supported by my great teammates. I was the weak link, and they didn't leave me behind. They helped me conquer many obstacles that I wouldn't have been able to do on my own.
