prairiewindmomma
They are dealing with the problem, but it was caused by a patron....and I don't see how this problem won't reoccur at some point. Tell me what you know about bedbugs. They arrived in town this spring and everyone is talking about craiglists purchases, thrift store purchases, etc. as how they got bedbugs. PinkyandtheBrains.
All I know is that they are very difficult to get rid of. It can take a long time and get costly.
gingersmom
My mother lives in an antiseptically clean house and got bed bugs. She had to move out for a month plus buy new mattress and sofa. It cost major $$$ but she has been bug free for years.
chiguirre
That's awful! I'd flip if I had to give up the library or deal with bed bugs!
Χάων
That is terrifying. I cannot image. What are they doing to deal with the problem?
MomOfOneFunOne
AMDG I don't really know anything about bed bugs but our library closed once for the same reason. It was closed for three days for treatment and when it reopened, almost all of the furniture had been replaced. Fabric covered chairs were replaced with plastic ones. That library has since closed for a three-year renovation. The very small library space that opened for the mean time is all plastic and vinyl (and metal with lots of tech and hardly any books). Kim in Appalachia
Oh, that is so much worse than lice. I only know that they are very difficult to get rid of. Don't believe the stuff advertised as "Bed Bug killer" , nothing but heat will kill those suckers (plus a now banned pesticide). Do invest in bed bug covers for your matteress. The good ones are pricey, but worth it. If you do get books from the library, leave them in a hot car for a day (this won't work once it get's cold out. :( ) The other issue to have to worry about is your clothes. You could change as soon as you get home and wash you clothes right away, but how annoying.
aggieamy
Do you live in Kansas? I was listening to something on NPR today about the library book sale being canceled because they found bed bugs. Eek.
prairiewindmomma
So, I googled bed bug + public library and I wish I hadn't. Apparently many public libraries have had this issue. I started googling the names of specific libraries I know of near us and many of their names popped up as having dealt with infestations. Those articles brought up links to reports of bed bugs in movie theaters, restaurants, and hotels. I am ready for my bleach shower. I am officially done with public libraries, thrift stores, and movie theaters.
happi duck
Oh God! I wish I could unread! I worry too much already...
Luanne
I think I would avoid that library at all cost if possible. Believe me, you don't want bedbugs hitchhiking on your clothes or their books and coming into their home. They are worse than anything I have ever seen. G5052
I'm not surprised. The community college I work for had a near-scare with a couch in the library on one of the campuses. They took the couch out and treated the library, and supposedly and that was it. Supposedly.

Thanks to the OP for the reminder that LIBRARIES and borrowed books can be a source of bedbugs. We've sworn off garage sales, Craigslist, etc.
countrygal
Oh your making me itch. I never though books would do that... do they stay in the carpet maybe?! Eww...
