Moxie
We just moved into a new house. There is a large foyer with a closet by the front door. The problem is that we use the garage door 99% of the time. The garage door opens into a hallway that leads to the rest of the house. Right now, we walk in the door and kick our shoes off in the hall. Annoying. In my dreams, I live closer to an Ikea so I could have a Stall cabinet http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80169561/ in the hall. Since we don't, what else can I do? We've tried the cheap shoe cubbies from Target in the past and it didn't work; no one used them. Other shoe holding ideas for a narrow hallway? PinkyandtheBrains.
We used a laundry basket for a long time.
Plink
Kick them off in the garage instead?
Pegasus
You could hang a shoe organizer on the back of the garage door. Inexpensive and keeps all the shoes off the floor without blocking the narrow hallway with a box or basket. Edited to add picture. . . Moxie
I don't think the hall is wide enough for a laundry basket. The garage floor is too dirty for socks and there isn't a great place there for shoes. I thought about some long, narrow baskets??
rieshy
Haunt Goodwill and thrift stores. We have a narrow 6 foot tall, shallow wardrobe with shelves right by the front door for shoes. It has a pretty small footprint. I got it at an "antique" shop for cheap. It replaced the large basket I used to have out. Imho, shelves are much better because tossing shoes in a basket tends to wear them out faster.
AmyontheFarm
Same problem here... :lurk5:
plansrme
Cut off their feet? That would drive me insane. I would go with the garage or make them walk all the way to their bedrooms (oh, the horror!). I do not tolerate shoes in communal spaces unless they are on one's feet.
Ellie
We walked down the hall and put our shoes in our own closets.
Moxie
Their rooms are upstairs. That won't work. Plus, it isn't very practical for us. Head out the door, grab your shoes on the way out. That makes sense to me. Now I need a way to contain them.
Incognito
Could you make the garage work for shoes? I am picturing a laundry basket, then a strip of old carpet from somewhere (which you replace every once in a while, or a runner from Home Depot cut to length). Cera
We have a shelf in the garage just outside the door to the house (just a waist height bookshelf). We just kick off our shoes before we enter the house.
nd293
We have a very narrow entrance hall (that word is really too glorified for what we have). I made a long low shoe rack myself, out of pine - it has 2 shelves for shoes, then a top that we often use to store things that will be heading out the door with us (eg a book or toy that needs to be returned to a friend). The rack is only as high as my knee, so does not obstruct the hallway if I am entering carrying shopping bags.
skeeterbug
Shoe cubby? http://www.amazon.com/ClosetMaid-15-Cubby-Shoe-Organizer-White/dp/B002IT6E6A/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1367798779&sr=8-7&keywords=Wooden+shoe+rack Shoe rack? http://www.amazon.com/Winsome-Wood-Foldable-4-Tier-Natural/dp/B000NPTVES/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367798779&sr=8-2&keywords=Wooden+shoe+rack Cheap shoe rack? http://www.amazon.com/Whitmor-6026-3562-Natural-Household-Shelves/dp/B004BDP656/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1367798779&sr=8-3&keywords=Wooden+shoe+rack All of these are quite narrow and should fit into a hallway. Get enough so that each person has their own shelf. You could make it prettier by using baskets on the shelves. I'd rather have the Ikea ones too!
