What do you use for state history?

We're using SOTW and I want to incorporate state history chronologically. I know TWTM says to do state history year 4, but some of my state history (a tiny bit) started in the 1700s, so I want to start putting snippets in next year (we'll be doing SOTW Volume 3). I'm in WA. Any suggestions? I could do my own thing, but it's nice to have something to jump off of!

  • 2 weeks later...

Came across this thread hunting for my own state history; found it to be short; will add what I have so far.

  • For children in K-6, Easy Classical has a state study package. Note that Easy Classical materials are unabashedly Reformed Protestant. Whether this suits or doesn't, I don't know how much it affects their state history packages.
    • Easy Classical's state study is really skewed to the younger years; I think they schedule this study in first grade. The main state-specific resource is "My First Book About" which has an Amazon-estimated range of grades 2-4. So your 6th grader might not love it.
    • State Shape is a series for ages "6 to adult" but there are a limited range of states available.
    • At Rainbow Resources there are several State Study books available from Heineman, some for all states (as far as I can tell). There is an "All About" series, a "History of" series, a "Native Peoples" series, and so on. I have no idea how good and/or fun these are.
    • The Library Video Company has a series of videos on US Geography . Note that it is generally prohibitively expensive to order from this company, so most of us will be hoping our library has these (Netflix doesn't). The list includes:
      • states: California; Florida; Michigan; New York; Texas.
      • regions: Midwest; Northeast; Southeast; Southwest; West
      • one on the Commonwealths and Territories
      • one for the United States generally; one for State Capitals

[*]Right on target for WTMers hitting state study in 4th grade: Calvert's state history aimed at grades 4-5. They don't have all states yet, though; look for yours on their site.

okay, off to hunt 'round some more.

I found a fairly good scope and sequence for my state study from my local public school website.

I then bought an old textbook (formerly used by the school system) covering my state study. The two resources are very similar, even though the textbook is old.

We are going to read through the textbook over the next year, and the kids will do notebooking (mainly worksheets I found on the school website) to create a notebook.

We also will do a state lapbook. I found two for our state at HOAC.

With my older three, we just went everywhere and talked about everything. Our state museum was our spine, honestly, because the artifacts are laid out chronologically in a path and keyed to the state standards. We went to the museum often, and referred to facts we'd learned there while exploring our state. We also learned our state's history as we studied genealogy, because we've had ancestors and relatives involved with the major eras and events of our state's history. After a lifetime of such discussions and exposure, I think they've learned enough state history.

My youngest son (8 years old) missed out on all those discussions with relatives and frequent trips to the state museum. He's currently learning state history formally, with a public school fourth grade textbook as the spine and whatever I think of to fill it out. He likes notebooking, so we're doing that. Also, we'll be taking lots of field trips this summer to historical sites in our state.

Is Calvert an online school? When I look at the state program it says to "Enroll." Do I just receive the materials, or am I really enrolling a child in this program? I'm not interested in that.

We did a year-long study of FL state history and found a TON of material, book lists, etc. online. In FL, the public schools study state history in 4th grade, so by googling "Florida 4th grade social studies" or "Florida 4th grade state history" I got a lot of hits.

I came up with a series of articles (60+) with writing assignments & comprehension questions that I used as a spine, plus book lists, field trip ideas, and even some hands-on projects. I also found a publisher that specialises in FL historical literature, which led me to more great books.

www.studiesweekly.com

Studies Weekly has state studies for all 50 states in 4th grade. It costs around $10 so it is affordable. With a few supplements, it would be a good overview of your state.

ETA fix link

Do you know how the shipping and handling is? I can't find out on the website. Is it charged per quarterly shipment? Is it reasonable?

Redhead mom, how did you get the Teacher's Guide for the state studies? Did you order 10 copies? I thought I read that you could only get the Teacher Guide with at least 10 copies.

Tomandlorih, thanks for letting me know about shipping. I tried all the cart stuff, filled in my address and the tax and shipping never showed up, it wanted me to enter my CC# without knowing that. Hmm, maybe I will try from a different Internet program.

I ordered the Studies Weekly for my state and my total was $9 and change. I received all 4 shipments in the same week, and they each included teachers guides with quizzes.

I am now looking at some of their other newsletters as supplements for science and history.

You're welcome Tuckabella and I'll echo your question for Redhead Mom... I also read that you get the Teacher's Guide with at least 10 copies. Please tell us how to get it while just ordering the one copy we need=D THANK YOU!

They send the Health Units for the whole year all at once. They send the History and Science weekly's in quarters. I recieved my first quarter in September ( I ordered in July) and I just received my fourth quarter a week ago which was March through May ending at Week 28. (2 History, 2 Health, 1 Science for whole year was only $35 total) Shipping was only $3.24...... Awesome Deal!
