Pamela H in Texas
If I shopped on the night of Thanksgiving (ToysRUs, both my big kids went with me), can I handle today? (Note: We do neither Thanksgiving or Christmas) Honestly, that Thursday night was quite pleasant. I don't like crowds OR noise; but everyone was helpful and nice and courteous. I *need* to shop before January 2nd. My hubby has off today and tomorrow as well as next Tuesday. Obviously school is out so I have seven littles (see signature) to work around also (would prefer not to take any or just the baby). Included in this trip would be exchanges. I probably COULD do it at Walmart, but I think ToysRus may be a better choice. Realistically, I'll probably end up at both <sigh> OH, another question....is there any online retailer who would take brand new in the box items that they didn't sell to us (but do sell on their site) so I could do my exchange online? lynn
If you go out early the crowds should be light Returns today maybe light since most returns are done 26. Not sure about online returns.
happyhomemaker
Thanksgiving night is not usually that bad because everyone goes early in the morning. Christmas Eve will be the opposite. It will be ok in the morning and get crazier as the day progresses. Go as early as you can. Oh, and I think most physical stores take back stuff you buy online. You can probably check the return policy online to make sure.
Brilliant
I'm going out by 9AM just for some groceries. I think traffic and parking will be insane if I wait much longer. Good luck to you at Walmart!
Night Elf
OH, another question....is there any online retailer who would take brand new in the box items that they didn't sell to us (but do sell on their site) so I could do my exchange online? You could try telling them the gift giver told you where they bought the gift and that you don't have a receipt. Maybe they'll take it. Our Walmart was practically empty yesterday afternoon. I'm going to go again in a little while and I'm hoping it will still be less populated. I hadn't planned to go out but dd20 left her gift wrapping until the last minute and is working today and won't have time to do it. I got roped in. Good grief! I've never shopped on the 26th, but I did work retail for a few years. The day was crazy busy.

Well, Thanksgiving night used to not be bad (I don't even think most stores were open!) but over the past few years many of the big Christmas stores have started opening for their Black Friday shopping on thanksgiving night. I think Toys R Us opened at 8pm this year. Crazy!!!
Pippen
I was out both Saturday and Sunday and the crowds were far lighter than I expected. Parking lots that usually are jam packed on that weekend were maybe two-thirds full. I only had to wait any length of time in check-out at one store. That store wasn't crowded-they just didn't have enough help. I think online shopping has made a MAJOR dent in local sales this year.
Tammyla
I think shopping early would be fine. Toy's Rus is on-line. You might call the store and see what their exchange policy is. I don't know of any retailer that takes items they know aren't theirs.
Plateau Mama
Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near those two stores today. If I absolutely had to I would go Several hours ago. If I had returns I'd do them today or not until January.
Pamela H in Texas
THanks y'all. My big kids went for something else and got a gift card for the things we took back. Crazy us decided to go shopping after Christmas hoping for a few sales. At least we already have the exchanges done :) I figured most stores would exchange if they carried the item. But wouldn't it be cool if Amazon let you exchange items for credit for things from them?
