Dustybug
I'm having trouble finding something that is both fun, age appropriate AND fits in with our beliefs. For various reasons SOTW 1 clashes too much with some of our beliefs to use, although the other volumes look fine. Any suggestions?
boscopup
Have you read sotw 1 or are you going by Amazon reviews? It's fairly neutral. I'm YE and didn't have an issue using it in first grade. We read the Bible alongside it. Paula's Archives (the redshift site) has tables correlating sotw with Vos and Egermeier.
Dustybug
I haven't read the entire book, but yes I have read the first several chapters. I haven't even read the amazon reviews.

boscopup
Ok, just checking. I did alter a little bit while reading aloud (particularly one of the Bible stories), but otherwise we liked it. I also discussed my edits with my son, since he reads the book on his own sometimes. You could look at Mystery of History, though it is often recommended for older kids. Rosie_0801
If you've already got SOTW, why not skip the few chapters that bother you? You'll fill those areas in during your Bible studies, no?

I read a good portion of it while I was in Barnes and Noble one day. :)
edeemarie
I spent a few weeks putting together some different resources I will use for my 3rd and 1st graders. There are a lot of sources put together, and I am sure we will end up dropping some parts, but this is our first year doing history on our own (not boxed curricula) and I wanted to keep all options open:-) We will start it in January. http://wateronthefloor.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/ancient-history-curriculum.pdf
ByGrace3
Well having done Ancients using SOTW and regretted it, when we do it next time around my younger dc will use either Veritas Press or Biblioplan.
Dustybug
Veritas Press. :) Does this include hands on activities? Ok, just checking. Would you mind sharing with me (PM me if you like) why you regretted it? Also, doesn't Biblioplan use SOTW? I know MOH is an option there as well, but that's for older children. SilverMoon
Does this include hands on activities? Yes, it does. There's a puny sample of what's in the teacher manual here. Keep in mind that the "worksheets" aren't intended to be written out by little kids; do them orally. Each VP set is designed to teach grades 2-6, so some things are intended for the older side, and some for the younger. They give you lots of options to choose from. SilverMoon
There's also a wall size map in the back of the TM. Each card has one medallion sticker for them to color and glue onto the map.

So you only cover ancient egypt that year? It looks like Greece and Rome are covered the next. Am I right? So it would take more than one year to get through Ancients? ByGrace3
I blogged about it here http://onemagnificentobsession.blogspot.com/2012/07/2011-2012-year-in-reviewhistory.html?m=1 BP does schedule SOTW but the revised BP actually lists it as an alternative spine. You could use the companion as a spine. Also the VP cards are scheduled as well.
SFM
Well having done Ancients using SOTW and regretted it, when we do it next time around my younger dc will use either Veritas Press or Biblioplan. I wonder as well, do you mind sharing? I have been wondering about using it and considered MOH as well. I use Biblioplan right now and really enjoy it but wondered why you regret using SOTW Vol. 1, we use the other volume (currently on 3) and really love it. Thanks. We are longtime Sonlight users and while I know it doesn't strictly follow the 4-year cycle, I think it could easily be adapted to do so. We use it as is. serendipitous journey
If we were YE I'm pretty sure we'd be using Veritas Press. :) For just a living-book spine for one year, you might like Synge's On the Shores of the Great Sea. serendipitous journey
In terms of fun and YE Easy Classical history also comes to mind: there are a variety of books scheduled, and some projects too, for you to pick and choose from. AnnaM
I use MOH wiht my 2nd and 3rd grader. It is a bit over their heads, but since it is on a cycle I just wanted to use the first covering of each book to introduce it and then go back for a more comprehensive study second time around. Amy in KS
Love the veritas press self paced online course (samples available on their website). The last couple of years they had great deals available for it in the Spring.

Mommy to monkeys
Queen Homeschool has an Ancient you could do with younger kiddos. I was actually just going to mention this. It looks like a very "light" spine, but plenty for that age if you fill in with some historical fiction. http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/054741/b17bef0064cd9583ee6d86a0
chicagoshannon
I believe Veritas press just published a book that is supposed to be similar to SOTW. You might want to look into that.
Donna A.
My Father's World Creation to the Greeks. :) In our family at the 2nd grade level, we would skip Streams of Civilization and The Children's Homer,, and then get more age-appropriate books from the library which are on the extensive booklist in the back of the TM. MFW doesn't use SOTW 1, but it does use SOTW 2 thru 4 in the following years. http://www.mfwbooks.com/products/M50/40/15/0/

lluv
Thanks for posting about the new VP history book chicagoshannon! We have been using SOTW I, since MOH was a little advanced for my 6 yr old. I just ordered it and plan to use it as soon as it comes in. We are doing Classical Conversations this year as well, so I think it will hit most of the events on their new timeline. YAY!
Susie in MS
Have you looked at this? http://www.dianawari.../basic-overview If using DIana Waring's materials with younger children I don't advise using the main program unless you have olders. However she does have an Elementary Activity book that uses the Bible as the main spine. YOu can add picture books as desired. Sample unit here.
