melissad2
I've been watching her and the baby off and on all day and she seems likes she is trying to get away from the baby . Baby tries to nurse and she kicks and moves away. Maybe it is normal giraffe behavior?
justLisa
That's ok. I'm coming to get him. His name is Henry and he already has a friend named Waffles. I have the PERFECT spot for him :D

Mergath
Has she always lived at the zoo? Maybe she hasn't had a lot of examples of what mother giraffes normally do, and she's just not sure what to do with the little thing. I had the same problem after dd was born. :tongue_smilie:
Guest inoubliable
I have to say that I wasn't exactly fond of any of my dc after giving birth. I'd guess that she's probably exhausted.
kewb
Maybe she has ppd. Honestly though, the poor thing is probably exhausted and just wants a few minutes of peace and quiet.
Wendi
Last night, she was grooming the baby a lot. She was pacing a lot earlier. Probably it makes her nervous to be inside when she'd normally be let outside, and she misses her routine. Plus she's never been a mom before, right? She may do okay. I don't know how much giraffe moms spend doting on their babies. Considering the baby is up and walking around within an hour of birth, I'd guess they're more independent than babies that lie around in nests for weeks. KWIM? So it may be normal for mom to leave the baby alone for long periods between feedings. Wendi
myfatherslily
I was wondering if her pacing around helped the baby get stronger, always following her. Maybe she's just trying to get away! I do that! "ACK! You people keep following me! Go away, already!" Still, I prefer to tell myself that it's a good thing. :)
fairfarmhand
is this her first one? When our heifers calve, sometimes it takes a bit for the maternal hormones to get going. The baby will try to nurse and *WHAP* momma will kick it in the head. It is SO frustrating to watch, but eventually, they figure it out. Liz CA
Someone said this in last night's thread. She kept walking away from the calf but when found his legs and started walking better, she stood still for nursing. Perhaps she is making sure he can walk and the need to nurse is motivating for him to get on his feet. In the wild, they have to be able to run from predators. justLisa
Wait, you can't find a ride, or you can't find a ride that will let you bring a giraffe on the return trip?! I don't think they let giraffes on board. Oh Henry. I guess I'll have to settle for a blow up giraffe. Hopefully my neighbors won't hate me. Unicorn.
Finally! I was about to drive up there and whack her upside the head! Oh, and I figured out that every time I refresh or re-load the page, it goes to the birth activities video. Weird.
