My boys have really enjoyed these. In fact, Ben said he liked the one about Queen Elizabeth so much that he wants to read it again. I found them in audio format through Audible on the Amazon website, but you can go directly to Audible. They ranged from $1.95-$2.95 each.

I bought several for Ben to listen to on his MP3 player. They are very inexpensive to buy in book format as well, and I did obtain many from http://www.paperbackswap.com, but I still like this format for the ones we did not incorporate into history (or the ones Ben wants to hear again).

do you have a link for these?

Let me know if this search works for you. Essentially, I searched "who was" and audible audio editions. A lot of other books come up, but you can see by the photos which ones are part of the series.

OR you could search Audible which is easier. LOL Some are cheaper on their website while some are more expensive.

My DD loved that series. My sister works for the publishing company so we were able to purchase the entire set with her employee discount, and DD sat down and read them all as soon as they arrived. She is constantly re-reading them. She keeps them all together in a plastic bin and totes it around room to room.

She got in a habit of pre-reading the ending to figure out how each person died to prepare herself. Apparently dying of old age is preferred... This is my generally super sensitive girl who avoid most fiction like crazy. She just loves biographies!

ETA: We only have the books, not the audio versions.

I would purchase all of these except it takes me to audible.com. I don't want to use a credit on one of these. I would rather pay out of pocket. It doesn't give that option though. Bummer!

In your cart at audible, you can uncheck the "use credit" box, then hit update and you will get a cash price (and it is discounted due to your membership).

You do pay through audible, but it doesn't take a credit. You can choose to just pay.

I was wondering if anyone has a list o f these books by time period?

I don't, and I haven't bought the more modern ones, and they are still publishing new ones.

You can see all the titles by going to the penguin group website and filtering to just paperbacks. My link to the filtered search may not work.

I was looking at the series on Amazon, having never seen it before.

The one I happened to land on was Hellen Keller. It seems to have gotten a couple bad reviews.

Can anyone comment on the historical quality of the books in general?

Considering I am not a history expert, I think that will be tough. The material I read in the Queen Elizabeth, Magellan and Shakespeare lined up with what I had studied.

I remember the Jefferson what receiving bad reviews, but when I see the historical accuracy of a book being questioned, I do a little research on my own, and often the issue is that history is not clear on something. SOTW has several of its own claims of historical inaccuracy. So, in general, those sort of reviews don't bother me too much.

I looked through "Who Was Queen Elizabeth" and "Who was Albert Einstein" after reading the reviews on the Helen Keller one. Based on those two (and the Keller one), I think the authors stuck to the most accepted story for those who have controversial subjects in their historical past no matter what the truth they are leaving out or distorting.

In my opinion, these are okay for the younger crowd but I wouldn't use them for MY older (8-9 yrs old & up) kids. (Well, I wouldn't use either Helen Keller or Queen Elizabeth because of their slant.)

For the younger ages, making the assumptions of motives or feelings is fine because you just want them to make a little hanger in their memory for that person for the future. However, older kids should be given a bigger picture (such source documents or other perspectives) and allowed to discuss ideas - like if the English people (peasants) really hated Queen Mary or if Queen Elizabeth or if Albert Einstein was truly "expelled from school."

I just don't know enough about most of the people to tell what is truth & what is the "accepted story" (but not based on the truth), so I'm skipping these.

I just uncheck the box for using a credit and pay out of pocket. - Just checked Audible.com and it worked fine to uncheck the box.

I'm comfortable with them because I have never read a history text that I could say with certainty was accurate on all counts. Does that even exist? I wouldn't let my kids watch the John Adams miniseries if I only allowed resources with no bias. IMO, after reading several books -- not just reviews-- they do a great job of getting kids curious about a person. With interest like that, kids will seek to know more about them.

We read two different biographies on Andrew Jackson, and we discussed how very differently he was portrayed. We read two different biographies on someone else recently and were surprised at a contradiction, so we looked into it. I think it was Hidalgo.

Nathan actually argued with SOTW on a historical mapping issue.

We read a fantastic book on the Dalai Lama by Demi, but I also found some info online that showed his more flawed nature.

Does anyone in the know, know if a library could easily buy the audio versions of the books, then add them to the online collection.

Our library has a large collection of online things that can be downloaded through OverDrive Media. I have had luck requesting things at the library, but have never tried asking for anything that is not physical. (ie. book, book on CD...)

Our library uses this system as well and accepts requests. They confirm lots of my book requests but none of my downloadable audio requests.
