Punchie
DD5 (almost 6) is on a roll with talking animal books for read-alouds. I need suggestions, please! We've read Charlotte's Web. We're reading Stuart Little. And Babe, the Gallant Pig is waiting in the wings. Thank you!
morosophe
The Cricket in Times Square, by George Selden. The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling. A Bear Called Paddington, by Michael Bond. The Story of Dr. Dolittle, by Hugh Lofting. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by Robert C. O'Brian. The 101 Dalmatians, by Dodie Smith. The Incredible Journey, by Shelia Burnford. Actually, I'm not sure the animals do talk in either of the latter two of these stories, but they're certainly front and center! (You'll notice the movie versions usually do have them talking.) (Your daughter still seems a little young for Redwall by Brian Jacques, but it's another one to consider, if she's particularly precocious or fond of fantasy.) I hope this gets you started--or, rather, keeps you going for a while. Edited May 2, 2012 by morosophe
woolybear
I can't remember whether the animals talk in these books or not, but they are great animal stories. Rosie_0801
She'd probably like Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree trilogy. There are some talking animals in there. Rosie
jar7709
The Poppy series by Avi. We're reading these now. So fun! Also the Bunnicula books, and horse stories by Margurite Henry. The horses don't actually talk in Henry's books, but they might as well. :)

Punchie
Thank you for the suggestions! I will have to take a look at the books. :) I loved Redwall as a child, but I think it might be a bit too much for her atm. But believe me, I am waiting for the day she's old enough for it! KristenR
My dds LOVED Tum Tum and Nutmeg. We liked it so much I did a short blurb on it here. It's a gem of a book!
stripe
Hurwitz's Park Pals series (beginning with PeeWee's Tale) is fairly cute, and short, about a pet guinea pig set free in Central Park, who befriends a squirrel. King-Smith, author of Babe, also wrote many other nice animal books.
Julie Smith
The Poppy series by Avi. We're reading these now. So fun! Also the Bunnicula books, and horse stories by Margurite Henry. The horses don't actually talk in Henry's books, but they might as well. :) We are also reading the Poppy series by Avi. for the second/third time. Some possible spoilers from the series, that you might like to know about in advance are in white. Highlight to read, and if you are on a iPad then to bad. :p A note about this book. In the start of the second book the main character from the first book gets eaten in the first chapter. Throughout the rest of the series characters grow old. In one book the parents of three foxes gets trapped in a trap and dies leaving the foxes basically parent less (The Dad fox isn't much of a parent) One great series with talking animals is by Thornton W. Burgess. The Adventures of Reddy Fox The Adventures of Johnny Chuck The Adventures of Peter Cottontail The Adventures of Unc' Billy Possum The Adventures of Mr. Mocker The Adventures of Jerry Muskrat The Adventures of Danny Meadow Mouse The Adventures of Grandfather Frog The Adventures of Chatterer, the Red Squirrel The Adventures of Sammy Jay The Adventures of Buster Bear The Adventures of Old Mr. Toad The Adventures of Prickly Porky The Adventures of Old Man Coyote The Adventures of Paddy the Beaver The Adventures of Poor Mrs. Quack The Adventures of Bobby Coon The Adventures of Jimmy Skunk The Adventures of Bob White The Adventures of Ol' Mistah Buzzard The Adventures of Happy Jack Mrs. Peter Rabbit Browser the Hound Old Granny Fox Lightfoot the deer Blacky the Crow Whitefoot the woodmouse Buster Bear's Twins Billy Mink Little Joe Otter Jerry Muskrat at Home Long Legs the Heron Many of them are available at Project Guttenburg. There are also good quality recordings of a few at Librivox https://catalog.librivox.org/search.php?title=&author=Thornton+Burgess&status=all&action=Search I liked the ones read by by John Lieder. There is also one with a different voice actor for every character.

Julie Smith
All the Thornton Burgess books and books by Arthur Scott Bailey. http://textual.net/access.gutenberg/1/Arthur.Scott.Bailey Chatterer the Red Squirrel by Burgess is a favorite around here. Ds, 10, just finished Bailey's Benny Badger book last week. :) If you liked "Chattered the Red Squirrel" then you will like, "Sammy Jay". It almost seems like it was one book, one story line separated into two books. You will hear more about Chatterer's Adventures but from the point of view of Sammy. I think almost two-thirds of the chapter titles begin with "Chatter".
Spock
The Mouse and the Motorcycle/Ralph S Mouse/one other book in the series that I can't remember the name of. Dr. Doolittle series My Father's Dragon series? (Apart from the dragons, which may or may not count as animals, there are various other animals that talk--a cat, some birds, etc.) Ben and Me (a story about Ben Franklin from the point of view of a mouse) Mr. Revere's Horse (a story about Paul Revere from the point of view of his horse--who is a British loyalist and once belonged to a British soldier. by the same author as Ben and Me)

Aurelia
Ariel LOVED Black Beauty. Most of the others I know about have already been mentioned. The Water Babies has some talking fish, but they aren't the focus of the story. Oh, The Rescuers and Miss Bianca, The Tale of Despereaux, The Velveteen Rabbit, Just So Stories, the Hank the Cowdog series, and Bambi, too!
