UmMusa
I'm in the temporary housing which has a few kitchen items, but no electric mixer. I bought ingredients for cookies then realized I didn't have anything to beat the butter and sugar with. Do you think I can get the job done by hand??? Oh, just realized there aren't any baking sheet. Oooh, there is a glass baking dish, o I could bake it in there and cut bars. So....beat by hand? Lawana
Absolutely. Even dumping all the ingredients together and approximating a mixing will yield yummy results.;) Creaming butter and sugar creates a cake with a lighter texture. Cookies are much more forgiving.:D

Soror
Yep, I don't have a mixer and have no problem. Although, I am not quite *women* enough to beat egg whites by hand though to make meringue.
lewelma
I melt the butter and mix it in with the wet. I put the sugar in with the dry. Ruth in NZ (no mixer here for 15 years)
mumto2
Just soften the butter -- my kids do it all the time. Quicker!
KatieJ
Yes. My mother didn't allow us near the mixer when I started baking as a child. Bring the butter to room temp first, it will be easier.
jennsmile
We always make cookies by hand. My mixer only comes out for frosting. Big bowl and a wooden spoon are my friends. Make sure the butter is soft.
coffeegal
I melt the butter then mix it and the sugar together. Then we add the rest of the wet ingredients, the small amounts of dry (baking powder, spices, etc.), and the flour is added last. :001_smile:
JeanM
Just soften the butter -- my kids do it all the time. Quicker! :iagree:It makes a huge difference if you soften the butter first.
KS_
I never used a mixer when I made cookies as a kid/teen. I always creamed the butter with a fork with the sugar and it worked well.
prairiewindmomma
Soften the butter but don't melt it for best results!
