UmMusa
Yes, I said "pregnancy and microwaves". Is there any reasonable concern over any harm that could be done to a fetus by Mom being near a working microwave? I thought that was ancient. AK_Mom4
I think you are fine as long as you stay out of the microwave when it is running. :D
UmMusa
lol How about being in the same kitchen? I'm wondering where the reference for this 'fear' comes from.

NotSoObvious
Hmmm...I would think a few minutes in front of a microwave would be no more harmful than 1 hour in front of a TV! ;) I think you are fine. We don't have a microwave, but only because we don't want to eat what comes out of it, not because we are afraid of standing in front of it. UmMusa
hey, it is NOT me who is thinking this wonky nonsense. I just wondered if I had missed some important article.
TracyP
I don't know about microwaves, but I swear I read something about vacuums being dangerous during pregnancy at one point. I never believed it enough to try and see if I could get dh to take over vacuuming while I was pregnant. I probably should have.
Scuff
If it's old and leaking, you should stay away. (Or throw it away and buy a new one) If it's not, you're fine. ;)

UmMusa
So maybe rather than be passive-aggressive I should ask... Should I even bother to tell SIL that she's darting out of our kitchen for no good reason? It got on my nerves for some reason. She is, by nature, cautious about stuff. She doesn't drink out of plastic cups or own a microwave.

MomatHWTK
Older microwaves did leak radiation, hence the concern. My first pregnancy was over 10 years ago and it probably wasn't an issue by then- but I always turned my body away from the microwave and still instinctively do so today.

UmMusa
No Way! Arguing with pregnant women is a bad idea. Offer her a nice chilled pewter mug full of lemonade and pass the bean dip! Nah, I'm not gonna mess with her, she can choose whatever makes her comfortable. But I'm still going to laugh when she runs out of the kitchen each time someone uses the microwave! Driving without a "Baby On Board" sign is making her nervous, and sometimes I wonder where the hysteria comes from. She's buying one this week. But truly, I was wondering if microwaves were a real threat. I figured we expose ourselves to worse things. What about flying?

Microwaves and pregnancy I couldn't open the article in my iPad, so I'll try again in the morning. If there is a real harm, then of course it doesn't bother me! I don't doubt older wisdom, but unless the microwave has a dial or is obviously leaking radiation, it's silly.

I think it has something to do with the position of the body and the swinging motion, plus the tendency to shift furniture around.

mom2samlibby
Sorry, I had posted the link from my ipad. scrappyhappymama
I try not to stand right in front of the microwave when it is running. If I was at someone else's house and it looked like an older model, I might step out. *shrug* It may not be an issue, but it's an easy enough thing to avoid. I also try not to drink from plastic that is not BPA-free. Such crazies we are!
UmMusa
After reading those links, it looks like there's nothing substantial (or controlled) to worry about. 2or 3 of the articles cite Dr. Li's study which is the one that seems to not be a well controlled one. TracyP
I also try not to drink from plastic that is not BPA-free. Such crazies we are! But this is legit. And you should not microwave your food in plastics. I have heard of two studies in the last week, one on early puberty and one on obesity, that named BPA as a problem substance.
