Evangeschool
I am starting Kindergarten with my daughter soon. I thought about doing sonlight or something similar so that i would have a reading schedule but I think instead I'd just like to get a great list of classic read alouds that I can read throughout the year- kind of an intro to the great books. Any good recommendations for this age? She has a very good attention span. Loves all things girly ( mermaids, fairies, unicorns, etc) however i'd also like to expose her to new interests! Thanks! Embassy
Here is a list I put together for my son. He was in first grade at the time, but he was one who had trouble attending to stories without pictures so the list of books would be appropriate for K. lexi
I really like the lists from Sonlight, Memoria Press, and Veritas Press. I just go through each catalog, pick some, and make my own reading schedule. We love our read aloud time.
amsunshine
Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner (Milne) All Beatrix Potter tales A couple others (for fun) that she might enjoy if her attention span will allow: Pippi Longstocking Mr. Popper's Penguins The Ramona Quimby series Also, you might want to check out this thread about vintage anthologies. I myself just purchased some volumes from this series. They are absolutely wonderful. They are graded according to age of the child. The first few volumes are perfect for the younger set, and the language gets increasingly complex as the volumes progress. They contain all classic stories/poems with beautiful language -- and the illustrations are gorgeous. Don't be scared off by the price -- you can find a set of these for less on ebay, or you could just search for the first few volumes and buy them individually. Totally worth the search.:) I also like the Veritas Press lists and the Memoria Press lists. Another good resource for graded booklists not already mentioned yet is Ambleside online. Soror
There are tons of great lists Before Five in a Row and Five in a Row has great picture book recs. The good books list from Angelicum Academy and Ambleside Online has nice classic selections as well. I have always let them help pick out some themselves as well(trying to steer them towards better books). Fairy tales and fables, the library has great illustrated versions as we cannot afford them all!
