three4me
I got an email that Scholastic.com is having dollar deals right now. Can anyone recommend any of the books they're offering? I'm looking specifically for Pre-K and K levels. Thanks! ETA: Do you print the entire books? Or just a few pages? Or just look at it on the computer? houseofkids&pets
Sorry, I don't have any children in that age group. I would look at the examples on the web site. Maybe you could just pick out items that only cost $1 or less, that way you won't be out a lot of money if you don't like it. Also, another member of the WTM posted a savings code for scholastic: LEARNINGJAN . I used it today and got a couple of dollars more off of my order. Ohmomjacquie
Last time I got one with alphabet mini books. This time I got a cursive practice, states crosswords and an art/ crafts book.
momma2three
I really like the monthly idea books. There's one that's called the Month By Month Preschool Almanac, that we've been using this year. It has basically 4 themes per month, with a craft idea and read aloud suggestions and some activities. It's probably not anything earth-shatteringly original, but I've gotten some nice ideas from it. I just bought all of the individual month ones that are for sale (the spring and summer ones) for more ideas... at 70 cents each I think they'll pay for themselves if I even get one good idea from them! But they look like they have a ton of ideas in them, which will be especially nice this summer. I got a bunch of coloring books last summer, and they're very useful. My kids just go through coloring books like crazy, and just do like one scribble on each page and refuse to touch the book again. Such a waste of paper! I love having the PDF coloring books because I can print out just one page at a time. When we're doing some sort of theme, I look for coloring pages that match it, or I just print out a page for fun. There's a series called "Early Childhood Thematic Books" which is also fun. They each contain songs, games, craft projects, field trip ideas, etc. Again, I haven't actually followed a theme all the way through, but I pull ideas from these books as part of other things that we're doing, or just as random craft ideas that kill a little bit of time when we're all bored. I love that the Teacher's Express site lets you preview so much of each book! And at $1 each (or less: when I bought last August, you got $20 off your purchase, so you basically got 20 free books; and now they're 70 cents each) I personally feel like it's hard to go wrong if even a few things catch your eye in the preview. momma2three
Oh, you know what's the most random book ever, but so incredibly useful? This one: http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/nothing-but-patterns It's just giant clip art of basic shapes and animals and other random stuff. I print them out on colored paper and then we can color or do collages to decorate the windows of our house. We have a window in the kitchen that I like to always keep seasonally decorated, and I often use templates from that book.
sewingmama
Honestly - you can't go wrong with any of them really. I've bought tons of them and use them all the time for everything -they are so worth it. Do you have anything specific you are looking for? three4me
Thanks everyone! I ordered "Teaching with Read-Alouds" which sounds pretty interesting, as well as "A Year of Science". I may also look at some books with math. Do you print out the whole book usually? Some of it is kind of hard to read just sitting at the computer, but I would imagine it could get pretty spendy to print out the whole thing. Ann@thebeach
Are the titles people are listing supposed to be $1 because I'm not finding them. Found it in a different area: http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/dollardeals?product_type=269 You have the correct link, you just have to play around with the titles a bit to find them sometimes. Try not to put the full title and then search through the pages that pop up. ETA: All the titles I listed, I bought for $1. I have bought them between three different sales though, so I am not sure if all of them are in this one. I assume they would be though since they are saying this is their biggest sale. Guest
Are you entering the code in the Discount codes box? It will not work for me. I can't remember if you have to leave a space between them or not. Try LEARNING JAN and then try LEARNINGJAN and see which works. I did forget to use it a couple of times (I have sent several orders these past few days that they have had sales) but every time I have, it has worked. ETA: Are you pressing to "Apply" the code? Between PK and 8th, I now have about 120 books (more or less). I have lost count at this point . If I listed the K+ it would take a while to list them all. I won't even bother to calculate how much that would have cost regular price. I now have tons of resources for both boys and still have some on my list for future sales. Worth every penny ;)! krisandpaula
I would highly recommend the Vocabulary Cartoon of the Day book for 2nd-3rd grade. The book contains 180 words divided into 3 groups: nouns, verbs, and adjectives. At the beginning of the year, I divided them up and included 3 word cartoons per week into our weekly school folders. DS (age 8) has this vocabulary journal that I found at Lakeshore Learning. Each week he reads his cartoons and adds the words to his journal. The cartoons seem to be a very fun and effective tool for him. His retention has been excellent and he asks for his vocabulary words EVERY WEEK! I just put the Grade 4-6 version into my cart.
