Spryte
I've googled and found several options. Just wondering if there are any favorite sources out there? Good prices would be nice, of course. :) Thanks for any tips.
Poke Salad Annie
Dharma Trading has some you can order, but you'd have to dye them yourself. I've read that Kool-aid works for this. Could be a cheap option for you.
dirty ethel rackham
I bought ours at Magic Cabin many years ago - at least 7 or so. Dd11 still plays with them. They hold up well and are decent quality.
TexasRachel
Check out http://www.hyenacart.com or etsy. I know hyenacart has some and I bet etsy does as well.
FairyMom
Bella Luna Toys or A Toy Garden. I buy my large ones from Nova Natural.
NicAnn
Dharma Trading Company. And yeah, dying them with Kool Aid is soooo simple. It probably takes 10 minutes plus clean up for a whole stack of playsilks. Then they dry overnight.
ThreeBlessings
Etsy.com has wonderful play silks that have been hand dyed at home. It is always good to support people who are supporting themselves by working at home. :)
Spryte
Thanks! I ordered from Dharma Trading, because it sounds like fun to try to dye them with Kool Aid. :)
cindergretta
Thanks! I ordered from Dharma Trading, because it sounds like fun to try to dye them with Kool Aid. :) We might have suffered a small addiction to dying silk from Dharma with Kool-Aid... We loved it and they have held up exceptionally well, even going through the washing machine! (We dyed around 18 in 3 different sizes.) And they smelled good, too. :tongue_smilie:

I can't wait for them to arrive! I only ordered 3, because I want to see how it goes before going overboard (as I am bound to do). I liked the larger sizes at Dharma, too, but now I'm wishing I'd ordered some smaller ones. Hmmmm... I do see how this could be addictive. Did you find any particular colors to work better than others? And - very cool to hear they went through the machine wash. Nice.
cindergretta
We used red, orange, green, and purple. The purple came out beautifully. But they all looked great! I ordered so many like that to get the bulk discount. :tongue_smilie: Then was glad I did since we all loved it!
PhotoGal
We did the dharma/koolaid method as well. I think my favorite one is the blue - I can't remember what we used, though. Is there a blue raspberry or something? It came out pretty light, but it looks lovely. The red died surprisingly well. I was worried it would come out pinkish, but it really is red (like a watercolor red). Have fun! :)
Spryte
I'm glad to hear about the red - I was actually thinking of skipping red because I was worried it would come out pink. We're going to start with blue, green, and purple. I think. And then if they come out, I'll order more. Now I'm going to be stalking the mailman. Uh oh. JennyD
Washing machine? Really? I did these years ago with food coloring and while they came out great, putting them through the washing machine would have been a nonstarter. Just rinsing them out in cold always made them bleed plenty, which was not a big deal, but no way could they have gone in the machine. I always wondered if maybe I hadn't 'cooked' them enough. I bought mine from Thai Silks, by the way. They held up for years. I should really buy more.
FairyMom
You really can't go wrong with Dharma Trading Co. I purchase our summer and winter clothes from them and tie dye. They are high quality products and great dyes. I know you're trying Kool-aid, but if you want to paint their silks or dye, their products are wonderful! :D
cindergretta
Oh, we ended up washing them after they had been played with to death and were filthy, NOT as part of the dying process. Sorry for the confusion!
misidawnrn
A cheap colorful alternative is the silky "old lady scarves" that little old ladies use to cover their hair. I found a lot of these at the thrift stores. DD-2 loves them! And, they are about 25cents vs. $25!

Did you use an acid with your food coloring? The acid (plus heat) helps set the color. Koolaid wouldn't need any other acid since it already has citric acid in it. shanezomom
LOL! I thought play silks were lingerie! I've never heard of the other kind.
Chris in VA
Some women at our church made these for a bazaar. They sprayed them with dye, and then microwaved them in plastic bags to set the dye. Turned out lovely!

Poke Salad Annie
Bumping this up today, as I've been working with Kool-Aid dye this afternoon.... Kool-Aid has a flavor called Pina-Pineapple which gives a beautiful yellow-gold hue to the silks. I dipped mine in orange first, then left it in the pineapple liquid for several minutes, and it came out beautifully! I didn't care much for the purple that comes from the grape flavor though. The pineapple flavor smells yummy!
