bettyandbob
dh are bickering slightly about this. ds is going to spend next weekend at Virginia Military Institute. I am, as well, but I won't be sleeping in barracks. The letter says dress is casual. I've already explained casual does not mean sloppy and ds's usual attire is out. However, dh says dress slacks and button down shirt. I think that's veering into "business casual". I was thinking slacks, perhaps cut like jean, but not necessarily denim and plain long sleeved T shirt or henley. He needs clothing for 2 days and I think we need to go shopping. He has a suit, dress slacks and beat up jeans. He has dress shirts and beat up T shirts. He does not have in between clothing. Do you think one pair of khakis, one pair of jean type pants fit the casual description. What about henley or long sleeved T shirt? Making a Target run later tonight. ETA it's nice to minor things to worry about to get your mind of the big things that sometimes you can't do anything about.
ThatCyndiGirl
I'm with your dh. Too casual could be perceived very bad.
mommaduck
Dockers and polo or button down, imo.
SunD
I think khakis or nice jeans (dark wash, not faded, no holes, etc) for bottoms and polos or plain tees (not huge like some prefer but more fitted!) on top. Sweaters or jackets instead of hoodies (even my DH thinks hoodies are fine anywhere-wear :tongue_smilie:) if he's going to need another layer. Based on the place I would send khaki pants and polo shirts.
Mrs Mungo
What kind of weekend is it? Is he thinking of attending VMI? I would call the office of cadet life and ask. But, I would expect khakis and a polo shirt.
Sophia
I would go with the business casual look.

elegantlion
Agreed with everyone else. Business casual was khakis, polos, and loafers. This is my perception of business casual. If cold is a factor a long sleeve shirt would be acceptable as well. This type of shoe would be what I'd expect.
QueenCat
Dockers and polo or button down, imo. :iagree:Add a sweater if it will be cool. Best bet is to have ds call or email. If you don't hear back, go with dockers and polo.

bettyandbob
The letter confirming ds's overnight visit specifically said dress is casual. This is an official weekend for applicants. Check in early Friday morning and ending Saturday afternoon. I bought Target brand dockers (which are more casual than the dress slacks I previously mentioned). Ds is going to take his long sleeve button front dress shirts. VMI has events planned for me all day too. I get to stay in a hotel Friday night, but I have to be back at 7 am Saturday. I was hoping to hike around Lexington, but the parent's schedule doesn't have any open time until after dark. I've been there once and I'm hoping to have and excuse to go there a couple times a year for a few years. I don't know where ds got his military interest, but he really wants this. His second choice would be ROTC elsewhere. He wants to be full time immersed in cadet life. Thanks for all your responses.
