I wonder what generalizations Homeschool Mom has heard from non-HSers. This thread in particular made me think of the newspaper articles featuring Farrar & her kidlets, one of which (IIRC) was talking about how affluent urban families are the majority of homeschoolers in the DC area. (Sorry if I'm not remembering the article right, but I think that's what it said...)

This was to test the accuracy of statements like:

1. People HS because they can't afford private school tuition.

2. A man has to earn a high income so his wife can HS.

3. A person has to make at least ____________ to be able to afford to HS in today's economy.

4. People with average or below average incomes could not possibly HS.

Some of our good friends are in the above $300k zone, but in all cases both mom and dad work.

1. She is an AF officer, he does computer security for the government.

2. They both work as executives in the oil industry

3. She is a corporate executive for Sonic, he owns his own business.

4. Some dual military couples.

I'm sure you know this already --- but all of those are FALSE.

My son has never been to any brick & mortar school. I've had times where we had absolutely $0 income. $$ has nothing to do with the ability to homeschool (Alright, alright. I suppose someone who is dead broke with absolutely no support can't homeschool very well.) But what it really comes down to is the desire & commitment to do it.

I've done all kinds of 'meaningless' jobs so it could allow me time to be at home during the day with my son. I've lived off of energy drinks so I could work swing or graveyard shifts (I admit that graveyard is not the best, since I did have to sleep at some time... but it kept me from having to put my son in daycare!)

I am proof that you can't use the $$ as a reason not to homeschool. But people that don't want to homeschool will use it as an excuse.
