Renee in NC
I need a substitute for Crisco in biscuits, other baked goods, greasing pans, etc. Olive oil won't work (smoke point too low) and I need a non-dairy substitute. No margerine or other hydrogenated products, either, please.

Jen in PA
Coconut oil? I have made really nice scones using it, and imagine it would work as well in biscuits.
Orthodox6
Spectrum brand, non-hydrogenated shortening. Made from palm oil. I have used this often, and love the results! http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=

No margerine or other hydrogenated products, either, please. I always use coconut oil. So far, it has worked well in every recipe.

Orthodox6
Any particular brand or type (question mark no longer works. Orthodox6
I didn't realize they made a shortening, too! Thanks! I use this or the Spectrum when I want a "hard" shortening, and use the coconut oil when I want a squishy one. Pure whimsy as for which one, when, I suppose ! :)

No margerine or other hydrogenated products, either, please. I use coconut oil in a lot of things, but I also like palm shortening for frying and any where I need a higher smoke point. Coconut oil bubbles up horribly in deep frying, and palm shortening doesn't. I use Tropical Traditions: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/organic_palm_shortening.htm

Little Nyssa
Tahini is good. It gives a nice nutty flavor. It cooks up a little differently, so you may have to adjust your own recipes, but overall I use it for Lenten vegan baking as an equal replacement for shortening or butter. and it is good. Chocolate chip cookies made that way are good!

Renee in NC
Butter. I guess you missed the non-dairy requirement - it is most important of all. I am dairy allergic and butter is one of the worst offenders for me.:tongue_smilie: I do love butter, though, and switched to it from margerine years ago. Little Nyssa
I find it at Whole Foods, but some supermarkets also have it. If you have some kind of Mediterranean grocery nearby, they will have it.
