Replacement for shortening (Crisco)

Recommended Posts

I need a substitute for Crisco in biscuits, other baked goods, greasing pans, etc. Olive oil won't work (smoke point too low) and I need a non-dairy substitute. No margerine or other hydrogenated products, either, please.

I always use coconut oil. So far, it has worked well in every recipe.

I use coconut oil in a lot of things, but I also like palm shortening for frying and any where I need a higher smoke point. Coconut oil bubbles up horribly in deep frying, and palm shortening doesn't. I use Tropical Traditions:

Tahini is good. It gives a nice nutty flavor. It cooks up a little differently, so you may have to adjust your own recipes, but overall I use it for Lenten vegan baking as an equal replacement for shortening or butter. and it is good. Chocolate chip cookies made that way are good!

Where do you *find* tahini - I have looked several places because I want it for hummus.
