Can anyone tell me about fish oil for kids?

I'm just beginning to toy with the idea of fish oil supplements. My kids don't eat fish at all. I have one kiddo with SPD and another with suspected dyslexia. Is there a chance that fish oil might help them? What dose do you give? I'm sure that certain brands are better than others...how do I know what is a good choice? Is there any reason NOT to give fish oil? Is this something I should discuss with our doctor, or is it okay to just go ahead and give it a try?

I have used it and occasionally still do. I am not sure how much it helps, because I would not know how to test that one way or the other.

I stopped using it regularly because one of my kids was getting nosebleeds too often, and the other occasionally got them too. I had read that nosebleeds are a possible side effect.

I am interested to hear from others on this topic.

DD takes the Nordic Naturals DHA pearls. They were suggested by her eye doctor. He did tell me to take her off of them before major dental work and to let drs. know that she takes them if she has to have surgery. The fish oil is a mild anticoagulant. She only has to wear her glasses for seat work now and her attenton span has improved. I'm not sure if that's because her eyes are working together better, or if it because of the fish oil. Either way, we'll keep it up.

I have been giving my boys each one teaspoon of fish oil every day. Well, they may have missed a day here and there but 95% of days. I started when my youngest was 15 months old and he is 6.5 years old.

I started because my youngest has motor delays and there is some evidence that is very hopeful that it can help with such issues. Of course, we will never know for sure but my son is doing far, far better than anyone ever expected. Except for speech he appears to be totally typical and I have hope that some day we can stop PT and OT.

I mix one TSP of the peach flavoured Nordic naturals into about a quarter cup of yogurt. I use plain yogurt and I add one teaspoon of honey to that as well. I did buy the strawberry but the only thing the strawberry has going for it is that it is quite a bit more per ounce than the 'adult' peach or orange version. I got the peach and my kids did fine with that.

It is an oil so it doesn't mix with liquid. But, in a smoothie or yogurt it mixes like a charm. They have it every day with dinner. I usually give it to them before dinner gets put on the table, so it all gets eaten. I don't put it in a large quantity of yogurt or smoothie because I want to ensure it all gets eaten. I give a small amount with the oil and if they finish that, they can have more. My kids have never complained about the taste, but I am pretty sure that they think that is what yogurt tastes like.

We all take different types. Dd burped the fish oil, so she takes flax oil (Barlean's Strawberry/Banana). I am taking her flax oil right now, but do take Carlson's Fish Oil (Lemon). Dd takes Krill Oil tablets.

Buy the smallest size as possible and experiment. If you take fish oil, you are supposed to take Vitamin E with it. We use Carlson's E-Gems Elite.

I was warned by our neurodevelopmental specialist that one group of kids who should NOT take fish oil supplements are kids who have seizures.

I share that with a caveat, however; I usually follow up most advice such as that by searching the primary literature for myself, and I have not found any convincing primary (peer-reviewed) research to support that statement, which means if the statement has any support to it, the findings are preliminary only, and I cannot cite a primary source at this time. That would be worth discussing with your neurologist if you fall into this category-- though if it is part of somebody's preliminary study, that might not necessarily help much.

My kids have always taken it as I have a fish/seafood allergy and do not prepare or serve any fish/seafood etc. I also read early on that it helped with concentration and behaviour etc. Certainly when my girls were toddlers I noticed a difference.

Two brands I relied on:

Efalex- liquid, best for the younger ones, mine took it with minimal complaints!

Now we use Solgar Little Squirts, again, no complaints or side effects.

Obviously don't take fish oil supplements, but try to get my Omegas through Flax Oil.

HTH!

Barlean's Omega Swirl Fish Oil, Lemon Zest, 16 fl. oz.

YUMMMY!!!! Keep it cold... can be mixed with anything. The only one I can get down without tasting like OLD fish and burping yucky old fish flavor... if I do burp Lemony....

My children will eat it by the tablespoon full and beg for it. My daughter enjoys it mixed with yogurt. A friend makes a dessert that she serves to GUEST... mixing with plain yogurt, pouring into a graham cracker crust, freeze... serve. She cracks me up, because she will not share the recipe with those who have it. I have never had it, just happen to use the same fish oil. :-)

Adding that ds22 doesn't like his mood on fish oil, for some reason he does better with Evening Primrose Oil. It is omega 6 (GLA and LA). Just sharing in case some try the fish oil and notice it making things worse.

Nordic naturals is a very good brand. try and get something with a 3-6-9 combination. the nordic naturals chewies are good (my son hated them), but they have hardly anything in them. If your son will swallow a pill or take a liqued, go for it, you'll get more in him that way for less money.

My son is also SPD, and is using pro-omega since late may when I took him to a DAN!doc.
