Aquinas Academy
I'm moving to a more interest-led approach to science next year and want to make sure we have a good home science library. My kids range from ages 2-almost 15, so I'm looking for all levels of books.
mcconnellboys
I like Seymour Simon's books for littles: http://www.seymoursimon.com/ Parents can sign up for lesson plans available at his site. I like the Let's-Read-And-Find-Out-About-Science series. There are at least two levels in this series and numerous authors, although and think Franklyn Branley wrote a lot of them. I think the Magic School Bus series is sorta busy, but they do cover topics pretty well. I sorta hate the magically shrinking school bus, too, as I think it could possibly be confusing for littles.... I like the One Small Square books to use as unit studies over time, or as a core part of a nature study. I like Ellen McHenry's The Elements as an introduction to chemistry, and her follow-up organic chemistry, too. She also has more stuff on her website that you can use along with these. I like Harmony Art Mom's nature study ideas at her blog. I like Little Golden Guides for pocket ID books to use with nature studies. They have these for birds, animals, insects, reptiles, amphibians, rocks, trees, flowers, etc. I like Joy Hakim's History of Science books (I believe there are three, currently). I like Oxford's Makers of Science series, but you might not need these as well as Hakim: http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/25965/subject/GeneralScience/?view=usa&ci=9780195216806 (I'm not sure what's up with that price, but I got my set for about $30. They have sales all the time if you get on their mailing list....) I still like all the science titles in the DK Eyewitness series. I'm not sure if their movies are still available, but we also have a ton of those that we've owned since my oldest was a little guy. My kids love them. Each is about 30 minutes long. They are surely on CD now.... The newer DK Eye Wonder books are good for littles, as well.... For a nature study magazine, I like all those in the Ranger Rick family: Animal Baby and My Big Back Yard are the ones for youngers. They also have online support activities and tons of info.... I like all Janice Van Cleave's experiment books. Vicki Cobb also has written a bunch of good science experiment books. We love Isaac Asimov's science books. Satori
In addition to some listed already, we like the books such as What's Smaller than a Pgymy Shrew?, How Do You Life a Lion?, Can You Count to a Googol? and others for early elementary. I'll have to check out the Uncle Albert books. I think they come up on my "Recommended" page a lot.

Kinspired
My 10yo really enjoys the writings of Bernd Heinrich. Here are a few links to his books: Winter World http://www.amazon.com/Winter-World-Ingenuity-Animal-Survival/dp/0061129070/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_5 The Snoring Bird http://www.amazon.com/Snoring-Bird-Familys-Journey-Through/dp/B002WTC9Z6/ref=pd_sim_b_7 Mind of the Raven http://www.amazon.com/Mind-Raven-Investigations-Adventures-Wolf-Birds/dp/0061136050/ref=pd_sim_b_2 And I second the recommendation for Hakim's Story of Science books. stripe
We're getting great mileage from Russell Stannard's "Uncle Albert" books. These look great. Thanks so much. I'm going to get my hands on these! You know, on LibraryThing, your library is now judged the most similar to mine. I think I'll have to put you on ignore soon. Sigh.

Aquinas Academy
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm glad to see that we already own many of them and I've added a bunch more to my Amazon wishlist. Anyone else have more favourites? LittleIzumi
Bill Nye's books are great, too! Another plug for Let's Read And Find Out, as well. Oh, oh, I forgot Max Axiom!! It's comic/graphic novel style but all about science (he is Max Axiom, Super Scientist).

Vida Winter
We're enjoying Gerald Durell's My Family and Other Animals as a family read-aloud. It has led to many interesting discussions and internet investigations. http://www.amazon.com/Family-Other-Animals-Gerald-Durrell/dp/0142004413
