Non-US Centered Modern History Curriculum

Is there a history curriculum that covers from about 1800 to now that focuses on the world as a whole and not just the United States?

:bigear:

I have noticed that the extra read books in both WTM and SOTW are majority-US oriented. I'd love other books. I can find Brit (and its empire), Australian, and other English speaking countries, but would like more Chinese and Russian esp.

Anyone have a Dawn or LoriD-like list??

History Odyssey?

I've been looking at this question, too, and trying to decide whether to have my daughter do VP's 1850-present day or History Odyssey's Modern Times, Level 1. VP is almost completely American history, but it would get done because we'd use VP online.

You can see HO's TOC for Modern Times at the link above. It definitely has a broader focus than just the US.

What about using Around the World in 180 Days or some other history heavy geography course and just cover the history from 1800s onwards and maybe add some too?

This could work, but being the lazy person that I am, I was hoping it had been done for me already. :D

I suppose I could add in what I want to some other history curriculum.

I looked at that and it looks good. I was kind of hoping to combine all my school age kids into one history program. I wonder how hard it would be to do that? Would I pick the level for the youngers and make it harder for the olders or vice versa?

Great question. I haven't found much of anything. I've used Story of the World for my main spine and beefed up areas I'd like and skimmed over areas I'm not interested in spending a lot of time (we're Canadian and while we do read most of the American history parts, I don't do a whole lot more than read it--we choose to focus on other things). I'm doing completely "from scratch" for my high school aged student because of the lack of world focus in the hs years.

I try to add a number of historical fiction novels that paint a good picture of the area we are studying. That's also harder to find in more modern history, though.

I'm struggling with how to combine my rising 6th and rising 4th graders. HO Modern Times Level 2 looks too challenging for my 6th graders, but I bet it would work for a 12 yo. I'm thinking of using Level 1 and adding outlining, etc. a la WTM logic stage history for my 6th graders.

I think it would be fairly easy to combine your 5-9 yos because HO Level 1 schedules in SOTW 4. You could use Level 1 for your 9 year old and read the scheduled SOTW chapters aloud for your 9, 7, & 5 yos. Your 9 yo could do the rest of the assignments in HO Level 1. (I think my almost 9 yo would be able to do most of them independently.) If you really wanted to, you could do a couple of activities/coloring pages from the SOTW AG with your 7 & 5 yos. Your 12 yo could either try Level 2 or do Level 1 + WTM logic stage suggestions.

That might sound better in theory than it would work in practice, though. :) That would be my ideal world, but I know for me, if it's not all laid out ahead of time, it tends to slide.

I'd be interested in hearing what options you come up with, too.

A atextbook or what? By the way there are tons of Indian textbooks on NCERT's website for free download. I saw this in class 11

http://ncertbooks.prashanthellina.com/11_History.html

Galore Park sells history texts, and they're in the UK.

I had a thread 2 years ago which contains some great resources

The NCERT materials (which I thank you for bringing to my attention and to the forum) are really terrific. I have noticed that on the official NCERT site the materials are now "watermarked" to prevent piracy (although they are intended for free distribution and use).

The watermarking is annoying But the same materials are available on the "NoteMonk" website (also known to me thanks to you) so those wanting the Indian materials and finding them watermarked at NCERT might try NoteMonk to find clean copies.

I go to amazon books, put in the name of the person or event, and search that. I find a kid book or two on most important English/English speaking world events.

The Sino-Russian war, forget it.

Do you want another perspective entirely, or just more coverage than only U. S. history?

Biblioplan offers 1850-2000 in its Year Four program, and seems to try to expand beyond the borders of the U. S., but the U. S. is where it's centered. You could probably tell both of these facts by the year's title: "Modern America and the World."

All Through the Ages might be a good resource for supplemental materials, if you want to try to pad a spine out yourself. It looks like a bibliography organized by topic (historical or geographical) and age level. It mostly draws from the book lists of some of the big names in homeschooling curriculum (such as Veritas Press, Sonlight, Beautiful Feet Books), so it'll be pretty West-centered, still.

I don't actually own either of these items, but I am currently intending to purchase both for myself. Part of the reason I'm interested in Biblioplan myself is that it doesn't only focus on American history. I only remember two years in all of my K-12 education where we studied anything other than American history. I'm learning things in my son's first grade classes that I never even heard about, which is kind of pathetic.

I did not provide the link to the official NCERT site, actually.

It is at http://www.ncert.nic.in/NCERTS/textbook/textbook.htm

Mater Amabilis is building up Australian history, and its creators are a UK/US team, so they tend not to be so US focussed. http://www.materamabilis.org/

Got ya!

Anyway, for those who are interested the unwatermarked Indian texts can be found at NoteMonk, where the NCERT website has watermarked copies.

The NCERT website did not watermark the materials when you first posted about these, but do now.

I guess I am looking for both. I would like my kids to know that the rest of the world is just as important and it's history is just as interesting as the United States. The rest of the world didn't just stop when the US began.

It would be fabulous if I could find that material in English from the originating countries, but that is probably a long shot. :)

I don't really think this is a topic of particular interest, but you're not quite representing things accurately.

When I first posted about them, and when I posted on this thread, I did not give the NCERT URL, I gave this one:

http://ncertbooks.prashanthellina.com/

At that time I couldn't figure out NCERT's site as it was badly organized. They have since reworked it. They state their opposition to sites posting their material, anyway.

There are links to NoteMonk from this page, anyway, but I don't think it has everything. And not everyone wants to download a zip file of stuff thry've never seen!

I'm mystified why you seem to be getting bent out of shape. I thanked you for bringing those materials to our attention. I have enjoyed using them and would have been unaware of them if not for your posting about them, so I'm thankful for that.

After I downloaded some of the materials from the NCERT site I discovered they had begun to watermark them, while the Note Monk site (which I also found due to your posts) does not have watermarked files. I was simply trying to let people know that unwatermarked files can be found at Note Monk.

I am not trying to offend you in any way. I am simply trying to let people know there are alternative files (ones I have credited you with bringing to my attention) that are clean copies.

If there was confusion on my part about which site you linked to in this thread (which apparently there was) it was an honest mistake on my part, and I'm sorry for that.

I do appreciate your sharing your discovery with the forum. I have personally enjoyed using these materials thanks to your mentioning them on threads here.

Bill

ETA: I think part of the confusion we are having is when I said "when you first posted about them" I am referring to almost a year ago when I first saw you post about them (and when I started using them) and was not referring to when you first posted in this thread. In the latter case you did not link to NCERT, I mistakenly thought you had (not that there is anything wrong with that) I had just downloaded a slew of PDFs from NCERT and found the files watermarked and hoped to save someone else the trouble.

I am not bent out of shape but you keep saying I've linked to NCERT when I didn't. I simply think it's hilarious that you keep mentioning NCERT's stuff being watermarked, go to NoteMonk, etc, etc, when I did not link there!

http://ncertbooks.prashanthellina.com/ is not NCERT's site.

You can run a search for ncert posts by me. You will see that I always recommended the above site over NCERT's own. Both in this thread and in every thread.

Yes, I clearly made a mistake when I thought (wrongly) that the ncertsbooks link was to NCERTS. I am sorry for my mistake. I don't know what else to say. I'm not trying to paint you out poorly. I really appreciate that you found these materials, and I'm in your debt.

When I have spoken of the Indian educational materials in other threads I have always made it a of point of giving you credit for finding them and thanking you for that. I made a mistake here in (wrongly) believing you linked to the NCERTs site. I am sorry for my error.

I hope there are no hard feelings. I really appreciate you sharing this great resource.
