Melissa B
I currently have: Viking Tales - Hall Leif the Lucky - D'Aulaire Children of Odin - Colum Norse Myths - D'Aulaire I would like to round it out with a more factual but interesting book on the Vikings and perhaps a book on Viking ships. I would prefer a story type book rather than something like DK or Eyewitness that is more encyclopedia-like. Something at the late grammar or early logic level. Thanks! Sue G in PA
Usborne has a few really good/cute books on Vikings. Just check out the http://www.ubah.com website and search for Vikings. We have one in hardback that is a nice "storybook" type book. I'd link you to it, but it would be my own Usborne website and I don't want to appear to be soliciting. LibraryLover
A rec for a fantasy/fiction. We did Sea of Trolls as a read aloud when were were studying Vikings. It's intense, so maybe not for your youngest, but it's an exciting book that my ds especially enjoyed. http://www.bookbrowse.com/reviews/index.cfm?book_number=1529
Mrs. Readsalot
My son and I both enjoyed Beorn the Proud. Rolf and the Viking Bow is also very good.
In The Great White North
THAT was the one I couldn't thikn of! We liked Beorn the Proud too, better than Rolf actually.
nmoira
We loved The Saga of Eric the Viking by Terry Jones of Monte Python fame. Once you find the voice, it's a great read aloud. The reviewer from the School Library Journal obviously didn't find "the voice." :)
Melissa B
Thanks for all of the suggestions! I am looking into them all now. I also found Sword Song and Black Fox of Lorne on my bookshelf and I just mooched Viking from bookmooch. It is the first in a trilogy by Tim Severin. I like The Brendan Voyage written by him, so his Viking trilogy might be good as well.

HollyDay
Definately check out the Usorne books. We used several for our Viking study. We also used: THe Vikings (I think by Janeway) Beorne the Proud Norse Myths
mcconnellboys
Bernard Evslin has out an entire series of mythology books, including northlands. The books are generally illustrated with modern art and you would need to preview to make sure they are right for you, but they are well done. I think East of the Sun, West of the Moon is the title of another good collection of myths of the northlands.
Rosie_0801
"Viking" is a job description, "Norse" is the proper name for the people group(s). :) Rosie- In the SCA and knows it has made her touchy about such things...
Kathy in MD
The Real Vikings published by National Geographic is a good, non-fiction book. For fiction, my ds seconds The Sea of Trolls.
AuntPol
We read Beorn the Proud but did not like it. It was not that suitable for a read a loud. The chapters are way too long and the book doesn't flow well as a read aloud. It did not sustain the interest of my 8 and 9 yos. I think the story is interesting and worth reading but better suited for independent reading in the middle school or high school years. Academy of Jedi Arts
Dd enjoyed Strange Footprints on the Land by Constance Irwin. It is about Vikings in North America.

materursa
Roger Lancelyn Green wrote Myths of the Norsemen. While we haven't read it yet (it's on our list for this year) my dd has read a few others by Green that she has enjoyed very much.
