simka2
I have a reluctant reader, so this past Christmas when I ran across a graphic novel version of the Odyssey (in the childrens section of B&N) I picked it up. I am not a prude!!! that said I was a bit surprised by some of the images. There is one with Odysseus on top of his nymph lover, another with him kneeling in front of another lover (she's naked sitting on a bed and he's between her knees), and another with him in bed with his wife. Please understand, I have no issues with nudity and art. But these seemed a bit sexually graphic for the kids section. Just thought I would give a heads up!!! http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_25?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=the+odyssey+graphic+novel&sprefix=the+odyssey+graphic+novel
MerryAtHope
Hm, that IS a bit much! You might try the Rosemary Sutcliff versions--Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus.
Brenda in FL
The series by Mary Pope Osborne is excellent for reluctant readers. One of mine that I couldn't get to read voluntary - read these over and over again. Great adaption of the Odyssey for young elementary to read independently! My third-grader is reading the version by Mary Pope Osborne. I have pre-read both of them and did not find sexually explicit content. :)
Kalmia
FYI: The Illustrated Rosemary Sutcliff version of The Wanderings of Odysseus (illustrated by Alan Lee) has a watercolor of a topless woman (rather tasteful, but still...) above the chapter heading "The King's Daughter." See I don't think that would bother me ;) I was just a bit blown away that I found this version in the childrens section. I could understand the young adult section. I might need to look into the version Rosemary Sutcliff version again.
laughing lioness
My kids have loved the graphic bible and learned a ton from it and MMV recommended Shakespeare in graphic novel form. I've checked out the graphic novels at B & N and they are horrible. Soft porn, violence. Total UCK. My kids hate going to B & N anymore. Upper eled to young adult is cr*p. I think I will always love bookstores (even B & N), this was just a bit of a surprise. For what it's worth I think bookstores have and should carry questionable material....maybe just not sexually explicit material, in the kids section ;). Poke Salad Annie
I have the Giant Golden Book edition of The Iliad and the Odyssey, which is beautifully illustrated by the Provensens. In just thumbing through, I don't see any objectionable drawings. I usually recommend this book, but have found that the going prices at Amazon and elsewhere have climbed up such that it is no longer an affordable option. I paid only ~$6 or so for mine I think, but now it's quite expensive. If you can find a copy at the library, it might be a nice addition. By the time one gets to the kids section at my B&N one has already seen this stuff all over the covers of countless other books one had to walk through just to get to the kids section. ... just sharing an observation from my own experience :) I wish they'd at least keep the stuff in the back .. like .. the other back .. not the back where our kids section is. I appreciate the heads up, btw.

Guest RecumbentHeart
:iagree: We do all of our book shopping online now. I do too. I just also wish there was an option to exclude adult material from search results on bookstore websites and amazon.com - the most horrific (as in, is that even legal????) content has come up at times while searching for certain Christian titles and/or children's books. Bit of a tangent though, I guess .. :tongue_smilie:
