Denise Allen
I think I have decided not to purchase one of those EXPENSIVE writing programs, and use several books instead. Can you suggest others? I have: The Lively Art of Writing Elements of Style On Writing Well Thanks for your experienced help! :D
Denise Allen
Anybody?? :)
MommyThrice
For what age? Elements of style is really basic - probably just review for most, but everyone recommends it. I really like Weston's A Rulebook for Arguments - my 8th grader is using it. Covers (as the name implies) persuasive writing. Works well at the logic level. And Kane's The New Oxford Guide to Writing. My freshman is using this now. It is very complete and would make a good teaher resourse if your child isn't ready to tack it on his own yet. LunaLee
I can't suggest others, 'cuz those are the ones I have. :001_smile: I haven't used them yet, so I can't offer any advice, except to say, I think your on the right track..
Denise Allen
My oldest two are 7th & 8th grade. I am thinking of now, future, and review for myself. I will look into the two suggested. Thanks. I just figure I would rather buy 10 good cheaper resources (that cover a broad range) than one expensive curriculum that I may end up not even liking. Still looking for other suggestions if anyone has them. :)

Susan C.
I just purchased Lively Art of Writing, I like what I've seen so far, and its only $6!!
SkateLeft
I bought Lively Art of Writing a couple of years ago, and it's probably the best money I've spent on composition in all my years of homeschooling. My oldest used it in 8th grade as the sole writing component of English, and she really enjoyed it and learned a lot. If I recall, some of the assignments were a bit archaic, but she responded well to that. I think I'm going to pull it out again this fall. :)

angela in ohio
Definitely the three you listed. The Art of Styling Sentences I second A Rulebook for Arguments A good grammar/writing handbook (we have Brown, Little and the Rod & Staff handbook)
Kendall
I have all of the books mentioned except for The Art of Styling Sentences.(I'll be checking that out!) One of my favorites that wasn't mentioned is called Writing to the Point by Kerrigan
Kendall
Denise, I'm thinking more about this after having rereading all of your posts in this thread. I think reading a lot of different books is what is helping me the most, and so I tried to think of the books that I have read. Lost Tools of Writing is great for invention but Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student covers a lot of the same groundfor invention, arrangement and style-it just doesn't break it down. It would be a good resource for you and an older edition would be fine. I second my recommendation of Writing To the Point. I really like the way it explains connecting sentences and paragraphs. It is a nice companion to The Lively Art of Writing. I have the 4th edition of Writing to the Point and have heard that it is the best. I really like Rhetorical Grammar instead of the elements of Style, but an old book by Foerster - Sentence and Thinking might be replacing it as my favorite of the sentence style work. Karenciavo
Another  for The Lively Art of Writing. Cheap, effective, easy to use, takes no time at all to get through.
stephanier.1765
Another great thing about The Lively Art of Writing is that it's been around so long (it's as old as I am :tongue_smilie:) that it can be found rather cheaply in an used bookstore. Nature
I really like Writesource. http://www.thewritesource.com/ They have a large variety of books for different ages. Kids seem to like them because they're easy to understand and have great graphics.
Kendall
Here is another one to add to your list. The Argument Builder by Shelly Johnson. I just received it so I can't review it yet, but it looks good.
Blueridge
If you want to add something else, we used Teaching the Essay by Finley (AG) last year. It really helped with dd's SAT writing. This year she will wrap it up with Teaching the Research Paper. Handy tools.
mykdsmomy
Don't mean to hijack but could you use The Lively Art of Writing as a full writing curriculum for 6th and 10th grade? It seems like it's a very simple straightforward book and applicable to many ages?

J-rap
Increase Your Score in 3 Minutes a Day: SAT Essay worked great for us, and was just $10. It says it's for the SAT, but it really does a nice job outlining how to write a short, organized essay.
