WA state friends: Columbia Virtual Academy questions....

What a nice surprise to find some CVA folks. :001_smile: I just signed up for WTM today and came across this thread while searching for math ideas for DS (grade 2).

 

I still have to put SLPs together for my kids. I received an email from CVA recently but didn't catch anything about SLP changes--so maybe I missed it?

 

I can't believe how fast this summer has gone by. It sounds like you all are ready to start a new school year. I wish I could join the crowd, but I still have a few things to sort out with curriculum, particularly math for my 7yo DS who doesn't like writing and gets very bored with repetition. He did Singapore math last year and did well, but there doesn't seem to be enough practice pages. I am looking for something to go along with Singapore's Primary 2A workbook. If anyone has suggestions, please share.

Does it seem odd that I haven't heard from an AT yet? I've been 'in the system' for a month now.

Nope...I had the same question last year. The ATs are out until August 23. You most likely won't hear from one until that week. It's frustrating the first year when you're not sure what to expect and eager to get going. My advice would be just to do what you would normally do if you weren't in CVA until then. If you need to order books, you can order them for non-core classes through the AT that is currently in the office.

Rosy & others,

Based on these requirements, what do you use/suggest for social studies & science for grades 1 - 3? Do you use a formal reading curriculum for these ages? I was simply planning to read great lit with the girls and discuss/narrate/write.

Sorry, Beth--I just saw this. I don't use a formal reading curriculum, but I'll assign books when I feel the need. I use FLL for grammar, WWE for writing (and CW for DD9, but we already had that), and Spelling Workout. DD9 likes Wordly Wise, but I don't consider that necessary.

 

We're doing REAL Science 4 Kids this year, still waiting for it to arrive, and will probably supplement with library books on the subjects. We do SOTW for Social Studies. For both, I try to write my SLPs broadly enough to include learning about our community, map studies, nature studies and hiking, and their co-op classes.

 

My SLPs finally showed up today. Yay! They are a bit different than last year's though so I have a few questions. I will be calling CVA too but I am sure it will be a few days before I hear back from them.

 

How much modification does everyone do to theirs? Do I need to specify the exact curriculums we will be using?

If the SLPs posted are broad enough to include what we are doing can I just leave it as is? It seems like broad might be better in some subjects but more detailed might be better for others?? For example Language Arts seems pretty generic and wouldn't need any modification IMO but for PE if I want to use CBIs for lessons do I need to be specific about exactly what kind of sport(s) that would be? Both ds's want to continue with a specific sport but also might like to try a new sport but haven't decided what that might be yet.

That's basically what I do. I write my math and language arts SLPs to reflect DD9s ability level as she's working ahead of what is in the state standards. As mentioned above, I write Social Studies and History to include what we're doing, but broadly enough so I'm not confined to just that curriculum if we take a week off or want to do something unrelated.

 

For PE, I'm leaving in what they have, but also including their extracurriculars. Joann had a good tip about writing them to reflect your kids goals for that activity--I'll be writing "Improve swimming skills and prepare for participation in swim team. Increase proficiency in all strokes. Overcome discomfort and fear in deep water." This way we will (hopefully) be able to do private swim lessons again if group lessons aren't working, as was our experience last year.

 

I got my first order yesterday.

I got my Teaching Textbooks order on Tuesday. Yay! Now just waiting for a huge Rainbow Resource order and we'll be ready to go. :)

He did Singapore math last year and did well, but there doesn't seem to be enough practice pages. I am looking for something to go along with Singapore's Primary 2A workbook. If anyone has suggestions, please share.

 

Have you tried the Extra Practice workbooks for Singapore Math? We use those along with the workbook and answering the questions in the textbook and it seems like enough.

Have you tried the Extra Practice workbooks for Singapore Math? We use those along with the workbook and answering the questions in the textbook and it seems like enough.

Does anyone have an SLP to go with The Elements? It looks like the 8th grade SLP covers some of that stuff. So, I'm thinking of just copying and pasting some of that for my younger student. We are doing The Elements the first part of the year. The second part we are doing Physics with The Cartoon Guide to Physics and a bunch of kits. They actually fit in quite well with the preset Grade 8 stuff, so I think I'll just leave that alone. But, the Grade 5 student has covered everything in his already except one last paragraph.

1. Even though the PTB are saying the budget is gone, it really isn't. Basically, we're still expected to use the same amount of $$, but there are more restrictions on how we use it. I asked her about private swim lessons, and she said curriculum comes first, but if we have all the books and stuff we need, we can spend the curriculum allowance on lessons. She said the only problem would be if we didn't have our books and wanted to blow it all on private lessons at the beginning of the year.

 

2. For the SLP, we can add in whatever we want, but we can't take away from what is there. That is new this year. In the past we could pretty much alter it however we wanted as long as a specialist in that field would be willing to sign off on it. I've found the standards to be broad enough that they didn't conflict with my own program.

My teacher called today, too.

 

I'm a little bummed I can't make up my own stuff. On the other hand it isn't all bad. That is a lot less work for me. Two of mine are "behind" in Math though. So, she is going to see if there is a way to sub the lower grade levels for what is in the plan.

 

My second son went over pretty much everything in his Science plan already. So, I guess I can just breeze through that and see if he remembers anything from last year:tongue_smilie:

Hmm...I have changed my SLP in some courses significantly. Like hs chemistry is now horticulture.:D I have only received an email from my AT that the SLPs were available to work on. Nothing was said to indicate I couldn't change it. I guess we will see what she says next week.:)

 

I wonder if it might have to do with your enrollment status, AT, or district. We are CVA-Colville. We are not near there but that is where they placed us last year because that is where they had room to enroll my hs students, if I remember correctly. Also we are 99% enrolled.

We did biology last year. So, most of my seconds child SLP is done. She said to just make sure we touch on those. I figure I'll plan some kind of review each month to get them out of the way.

 

This is for Grade 5.

 

My oldest is Grade 8 and that is chemistry and Physical, which is what we are doing.

Well it will be interesting to see what my AT says. I don't plan on doing Chemistry and they need to be able to let me drop it and I really can't believe they won't. I realize Chemistry is customary for 11th grade but it is not in our plans this year and no, I won't change them. The reason I joined CVA was because I could still be in charge of my children's education and if that proves to not be the case I'll withdraw in a heartbeat. I have no problems with the courses in my 2nd grade daughter's SLP though I have changed the goals up. ~sigh~ All that said I can't imagine they wouldn't let me drop Chemistry, they were very flexible last year.

We are also starting CVA this year, and it will be our first homeschool experience too. Our son is starting K.

 

Received some of our books yesterday. Haven't had any contact from an AT yet. Don't even know what a SLP is!

 

We are so happy with this option! Can you imagine? We get to choose our own curricula, have our kids at home, get support and financing from the state?

 

Is there another country in the world where this would happen?

 

My husband is from Brazil. There is is illegal to homeschool.

 

When we lived there we paid higher taxes than here, but anyone who can afford it sends their kids to private school, because the public schools are totally without resources.

 

In the end hardship can serve to make us more resourceful. I have never met such resourceful people as a I did in Brazil-my husband included.

 

Even to have public libraries like we have all over our country, is something that most of the world does not have.

 

Let's enjoy it!

We are 99% enrolled in Colville too. My guess is as long as you touch on chem at some point during the year, no one will bother you. Honestly, I think you could probably get away with just ignoring their recommendations--I don't think anyone has ever referred back to my SLP except to qualify me for a field trip--and do your own thing. It may be different in high school though.

 

Ask your AT what evidence of completion of Chemistry will she be looking for.

Welcome Jenny! Yes, when I was homeschooling on a shoestring I got pretty resourceful too. :) But I'm really glad to be able to switch books when I feel the need now, and get our extracurriculars covered.

They purchase our curriculum and supplies. They don't purchase religious curriculum. But, we have done just fine. They do pay for fun stuff like music lessons, the ymca, zoo and museum memberships[/b].

I will never, ever understand how people justify this. I so wish schools here didn't engage in these sort of programs.

I have looked high and low on CVA's web site and WINGS for SLP info, but I find nothing at all. I also wanted to check my curriculum choices for this year with their "funded/non-funded list", but the link is no longer there. I wanted to get started on the SLPs for my kids, but I would like to do it right the first time and not have to spend a lot of time editing in order to please CVA. This is how I did it:

1. Start by logging into the CVA website.

2. Click on WINGS and log in (this may be a 2nd username/password).

3. There should be two yellow bars, the 2nd of which says "At least one student has offsite classes that still need to be submitted. Choose a student to submit them."

4. If you choose a student, you should get a page that says "so-and-so's Learning Plan". Under that will be each of their required classes.

5. You can click "edit this class" if you would like to add to the class.

 

It was my AT who told me that we won't be subracting from the EALRs (standards), only adding to the already approved ones.

 

The CBI list is on there. I didn't see the funded/unfunded list, my guess is they're updating it. Your AT should be able to tell you where to look though.

We're also with CVA Orient. I can get onto Wings and our SLPs are there, but blank. We were supposed to be assigned the same AT, but she isn't listed in Wings. I'm currently a little irritated about the whole situation. I didn't really love our AT, but she wasn't too difficult to work with and I don't really want to get used to a new one.

 

My kids are all elementary age so I'm anxious to see how the SLPs will be "auto" filled. I can't imagine how that will work for subjects like social studies and science. I don't think it will be difficult at all for subject like language arts, math, and PE.

 

I'm sure this thread will be hopping come Monday. I'm excited to see what everyone has to say.

So I guess I"m a little slow to catch on but........What does it mean that our SLP's will be auto filled in? Will we be able to customize them? How strict are they about sticking to them?

 

This will be our second year with CVA but last year we did the Calvert program so this is my first year with CVA custom.

As far as I understand it from talking to my AT, the SLPs will be auto filled in with the EALRs (goals) set for each grade by the State of WA. We cannot remove these from our SLPs, but we can add our own additional learning goals if (for example) we want to work on swimming/water safety for PE or World History 1850-present for Social Studies. I don't know how strict they'll be in terms of our weekly and monthly check-ins...in the past my AT has never asked me to justify my work by the SLP. However, if you want to order certain materials or participate in certain activities, they'll need to be on the SLP.

 

The State's EALRs are pretty general...most of them are represented in most curricula in some form.

 

Another thing to remember--you can alter your SLP during the school year. It isn't set in stone when you submit it.

I feel so focused toward planning our actual curriculum that I'm a bit nervous about having to spend too much time on CVA's requirements. I sometimes struggle with procrastination when it's something I'm not understanding or notfeeling confident about.:confused:

 

I'm sure it will all be fine, last year was fine, so I need to just wait and see. But I'm not really great at that either. ;)

I spent over an hour on the phone with one of the principals, and she told me that we'll have to go through our AT to customize the SLPs. I'm planning on giving mine a scope and sequence based on our curriculum and a few goals for PE written they way I want them and see what she wants to do with it.

 

The preloaded SLPs do not reflect our learning this year AT ALL in some subjects, especially PE. I know from talking to the principal that they aren't going to require us to follow their SLPs...if they were, I'd be forcing them to pay for dance lessons, music lessons, and team sports just to cover PE based on their goals.

 

After 4 years of CVA, I'm pretty cranky with CVA right now...I'm looking forward to politely unloading on my AT, whom I like.

Yeah, I just looked at the EALRs for 3rd and 4th...some are pretty vastly different than what we're doing. I'm going to check in with my AT to make sure they're not going to be stringently adhered to...otherwise I'll need to decrease my % enrolled.

 

Here is my favorite so far:

d. demonstrate movement sequences using rhythm. i.e. performs the chicken dance.

If I understand correctly, SOTW will only meet part of the EALR for SS. I will need to add a civics option as well and maybe some more mapping.

 

Did you read the Writing requirement? I hope we can word the SLP to accommodate WWE-style writing methods.

 

I'm really not sure about any of this -- as I'm completely clueless.

Although I am new this year, my AT (Loren Finley) is there and I have been able to discuss all of this with him. I have a 1st & 4th grader that will be doing SOTW 1 together (does not meet either's EALRs for SS) and Loren approved it, and my understanding is he is just planning on adding that information to what is already there. He really didn't seem to concerned with the fact that not all of what I was teaching (ie.. science, history) followed with what the state had down in the SLPs. I was pretty adamant that I wanted to start at the beginning of recorded history with SOTW 1 rather than in the middle with US for our 4th grader. Although I don't have everything here yet to start tomorrow, I am making do with other things we are finishing up. I am hopeful that it will all work out for the best though, and am definitely excited. Loren has been very easy to work with, and we are looking forward to the year. ;-)

Your learning plan should still be fully customizable to fit what YOU are teaching. If it isn't, they'll end up losing a majority of their enrollment.

Yep, I will be shocked if they expect me to change my courses. I have a really hard time believing that will be the case. :) Tomorrow will tell.

I think it'll probably be fine too...it's just unfortunate that they didn't give us complete info about all the changes when the ATs were still available. It would have saved us all a lot of confusion and speculation, and would have kept them from a bunch of panicked phone calls and emails.

 

My guess is that we can add whatever we want to the SLP and then work off of the additions. I do have an email into my AT, though...I'll let everyone know when I hear something.

I'm so relieved we just heard from our AT. I still can't view our SLPs, they're there just blank. Maybe she just took every last minute of her summer vacation. I'll give her a little bit and then see if I can figure out why we're in the system but can't yet work on them. Her email did imply that I should be able to access them, maybe I'm missing something?

 

I thought everyone would find this portion of the email I received helpful. Although I have a feeling that this may vary greatly from teacher to teacher.

 

Clarification: There is no cap on the CAF(Curriculum Allocation Fund—used to pay for curriculum orders) but we as AT’s are advised to put orders through using “prudenceâ€. I strongly believe in all my parents purchases as supporting the SLP…so please place orders as you have in the past and we will work together if your totals are getting close to last year’s cap of $1,200. The idea behind this change is to focus on a student’s individual needs and how you as a parent would like to educate your child—not limits based on finances. What is best for your child’s education?

Field Trips—CVA sponsors field trips but CVA parents can take field trips and have the entrance fees paid for. If you know of some great field trip destinations please forward them to me and I will forward to Tara, my principal.

No messages. It list 2010-2011 as the year. I know this is the correct year because my youngest is in K. I'm not overly worried about it, but I'd like to take a look at what was "stuck" in there and see what I need to change and work around. It's mostly just irritating that things don't work when I want them too.

I just don't see how it will be possible to not have a set limit. How will they decide what make sense and what doesn't? I easily went way over my allotment just with PE...only claiming the amount allowed. Actually, my last reimbursement form was for about $150 over the $60 I had left in my allotment. I haven't received reimbursement yet (I sent it in July), but I assumed that they would send me a check for whatever was left. (Hopefully that's how it works and they don't just deny it because it's over the amount.) Anyway, when you are talking about private lessons/tutors/whatever it can get pretty expensive.
