  1. Does anyone know if Singapore uses a spiral approach to math?
  2. Does the second option you mentioned offer you the opportunity to choose your own curriculum?
  3. We have the Chemistry book. I find it so simple. I doesn't have too much information (which I appreciate). All of it seems necessary and builds on the other material. I found myself wishing that I had had this book during my high school chemistry, which for me was a gigantic question mark from start to finish! I think they make Chemistry so easy and enjoyable. My son likes them so well, he does them at night after school is over, by himself. (We do them during our school day too.) He is in 1st grade. The curriculum is secular, and I use the book without making copies. We are going to continue with their books. I have ordered the geology and plants books.
  4. just one last bump, to see if there is anyone out there who didn't see this post the first time. As a refresher, I am looking for anyone who has read the original H.A. Guerber books (Thirteen Colonies, and Great Republic), and can tell me if they are written with a Christian perspective. Thank you to everyone who has responded thus far. Best to you all. Jen
  5. thank you for the suggestion about the eclectic teaching manual-found it on google and downloaded it! :)
  6. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." That is easy to read; but it is not so easy to feel. "Now are we the sons of God." How is it with your heart this morning? Are you in the lowest depths of sorrow and suffering? "Now are you a son of God." Does corruption rise within your spirit, and grace seem like a poor spark trampled under foot? "Beloved, now are you a son of God." Does your faith almost fail you? and are your graces like a candle well nigh blown out by the wind! Fear not, beloved; it is not your graces, it is not your frames, it is not your feelings, on which you are to live: you must live simply by naked faith on Christ. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." With all these things against us, with the foot of the devil on our neck, and the sword in his hand ready to slay us—beloved now in the very depths of our sorrow, wherever we may be—now, as much in the valley as on the mountain, as much in the dungeon as in the palace, as much when broken on the wheel of suffering as when exalted on the wings of triumph—"beloved, now are we the sons of God." "Ah!" but you say, "see how I am arrayed! my graces are not bright; my righteousness does not shine with apparent glory." But read the next: "It doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him." We are not so much like him now, but we have some more refining process to undergo, and death itself, that best of all friends, is yet to wash us clean. "We know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." From Charles Spurgeon's exposition of I John May the Lord Bless you and your family. May He strengthen and encourage your heart in Him.
  7. If you have read the H.A. Guerber books "The Story of the 13 Colonies" and "The Story of the Great Republic"-the originals, not those edited by Ms. Miller, are they secular books or do they have a Christian perspective?
  8. Our list is still short: Ray's Arithmetic and American History for Little Folks hoping to find more...
  9. thank you for the suggestions. I am checking them out. :)
  10. I got off to a slow start with both this year, and as I was going, I was wondering if one is meant to hit certain lessons at the same time. Have any of you figured out a schedule that works to make this happen? (i.e. so that you are covering months of the year in WWE and in FLL) Or does this matter? How are you scheduling the two to finish in one year? (We are in our first year, on level 1) Additionally, I am looking for a 1st grade resource that would allow for some additional parsing practice. There was an exercise in FLL where the student had to identify the nouns, and I noticed that we could both use some more practice doing this. I would need a book that has the answers in it as well, because even I am not very good at it. :) Thank you in advance for your input. Best Regards, Jen
  11. If anyone is interested, there is a sermon series that Pastor John MacArthur preached where he explains the five points associated with Calvinism. He calls them "The Doctrines of Grace". http://www.gty.org/Shop/Audio+Series/280_The-Doctrines-of-Grace scroll to the bottom of the page, select the sermon you would like to hear and then you can listen to them for free (or read them for free) by clicking on the red links. Jesus Christ came to SAVE sinners! Trust that God is good and His purposes are good. If you do not have this faith, ask for it, it is a gift of God. He is good. Religion says you must do good things to gain favor with God. Jesus says, "There is no one righteous, not even one." This is the true message of the gospel: that Christ has done it all already! We just have to ask God for mercy and ask Him to save us. If you have no faith, just ask God for faith. This is amazing. Amazing. Those the Lord has set free are free indeed! This is not about some people being better than others, this is about One Being who is absolutely and only worthy of praise, who instead of just allowing all men to perish in their sins and rebellion (which would be just), came in love to purchase their freedom and take the punishment they deserve. I can't even fathom a love like this, but I am living proof that God does this for SINNERS.
