  1. Does anyone know if Singapore uses a spiral approach to math?
  2. Does the second option you mentioned offer you the opportunity to choose your own curriculum?
  3. We have the Chemistry book. I find it so simple. I doesn't have too much information (which I appreciate). All of it seems necessary and builds on the other material. I found myself wishing that I had had this book during my high school chemistry, which for me was a gigantic question mark from start to finish! I think they make Chemistry so easy and enjoyable. My son likes them so well, he does them at night after school is over, by himself. (We do them during our school day too.) He is in 1st grade. The curriculum is secular, and I use the book without making copies. We are going to continue with their books. I have ordered the geology and plants books.
  4. just one last bump, to see if there is anyone out there who didn't see this post the first time. As a refresher, I am looking for anyone who has read the original H.A. Guerber books (Thirteen Colonies, and Great Republic), and can tell me if they are written with a Christian perspective. Thank you to everyone who has responded thus far. Best to you all. Jen
  5. thank you for the suggestion about the eclectic teaching manual-found it on google and downloaded it! :)
  6. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." That is easy to read; but it is not so easy to feel. "Now are we the sons of God." How is it with your heart this morning? Are you in the lowest depths of sorrow and suffering? "Now are you a son of God." Does corruption rise within your spirit, and grace seem like a poor spark trampled under foot? "Beloved, now are you a son of God." Does your faith almost fail you? and are your graces like a candle well nigh blown out by the wind! Fear not, beloved; it is not your graces, it is not your frames, it is not your feelings, on which you are to live: you must live simply by naked faith on Christ. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." With all these things against us, with the foot of the devil on our neck, and the sword in his hand ready to slay us—beloved now in the very depths of our sorrow, wherever we may be—now, as much in the valley as on the mountain, as much in the dungeon as in the palace, as much when broken on the wheel of suffering as when exalted on the wings of triumph—"beloved, now are we the sons of God." "Ah!" but you say, "see how I am arrayed! my graces are not bright; my righteousness does not shine with apparent glory." But read the next: "It doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him." We are not so much like him now, but we have some more refining process to undergo, and death itself, that best of all friends, is yet to wash us clean. "We know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." From Charles Spurgeon's exposition of I John May the Lord Bless you and your family. May He strengthen and encourage your heart in Him.
  7. If you have read the H.A. Guerber books "The Story of the 13 Colonies" and "The Story of the Great Republic"-the originals, not those edited by Ms. Miller, are they secular books or do they have a Christian perspective?
  8. Our list is still short: Ray's Arithmetic and American History for Little Folks hoping to find more...
  9. thank you for the suggestions. I am checking them out. :)
  10. I got off to a slow start with both this year, and as I was going, I was wondering if one is meant to hit certain lessons at the same time. Have any of you figured out a schedule that works to make this happen? (i.e. so that you are covering months of the year in WWE and in FLL) Or does this matter? How are you scheduling the two to finish in one year? (We are in our first year, on level 1) Additionally, I am looking for a 1st grade resource that would allow for some additional parsing practice. There was an exercise in FLL where the student had to identify the nouns, and I noticed that we could both use some more practice doing this. I would need a book that has the answers in it as well, because even I am not very good at it. :) Thank you in advance for your input. Best Regards, Jen
  11. If anyone is interested, there is a sermon series that Pastor John MacArthur preached where he explains the five points associated with Calvinism. He calls them "The Doctrines of Grace". http://www.gty.org/Shop/Audio+Series/280_The-Doctrines-of-Grace scroll to the bottom of the page, select the sermon you would like to hear and then you can listen to them for free (or read them for free) by clicking on the red links. Jesus Christ came to SAVE sinners! Trust that God is good and His purposes are good. If you do not have this faith, ask for it, it is a gift of God. He is good. Religion says you must do good things to gain favor with God. Jesus says, "There is no one righteous, not even one." This is the true message of the gospel: that Christ has done it all already! We just have to ask God for mercy and ask Him to save us. If you have no faith, just ask God for faith. This is amazing. Amazing. Those the Lord has set free are free indeed! This is not about some people being better than others, this is about One Being who is absolutely and only worthy of praise, who instead of just allowing all men to perish in their sins and rebellion (which would be just), came in love to purchase their freedom and take the punishment they deserve. I can't even fathom a love like this, but I am living proof that God does this for SINNERS.
  12. For those who did not like Rosetta Stone, what were the things you didn't like about it? Just curious. I bought a few books on Amazon, but just found that the texts were mostly geared towards adults. I wanted something that would do phonics and go slowly, not start out with "What is your name?" and "Where are you from?". My littles don't even know all the country names in English yet...one thing at a time :001_smile:
  13. Hi Kymmie :001_smile: I am not using Rosetta Stone, as I do speak Portuguese, but based on my observation of how Rosetta Stone teaches I would very much like to use it to learn other languages. We are still on level 1, but already our oldest picks up words when my DH and I speak, and also from kid's videos we watch, which makes him very happy. Feel free to PM me if you have further questions. What is your dissertation is about? Best to you, Jen
  14. We are doing Brazilian Portuguese instruction. We use Rosetta Stone and I like it. Our kids are little (oldest in K right now), and we are just starting. I try to expose them as I can to Brazilian Portuguese. We watch Bible story videos and also have some Bible story books, and Bible story songs we got from Brazil. Don't know if that helps, but just thought I'd say hi. Tudo de bom para vcs. :001_smile:
  15. Hi Jennifer, I am relatively new here, but I noticed there is a group for reformed believers in the Community section of this forum. The group is called "the dark side". I do not know how they chose that name.
  16. Hi Amy. Prayer. Ask God for help and direction, and ask over and over again. :001_smile: He answers.
  17. :hurray: this is me happy to find this thread! God has used Pastor MacArthur a lot in our lives. There are so many free resources on the Grace to You site (gty.org). You can do searches about any Bible verse, you can search most topics. Their search function works well. All his sermons are free and you can listen to them online, read the transcripts, or download them. There is an entire sermon series entitled "Doctrines of Grace". You can access it here: http://www.gty.org/Shop/Audio+Series/280_The-Doctrines-of-Grace You can purchase it, or there are options (listed in red text) to listen, read or download, which are all free. There is also a Shepherd's Conference currently going on at Pastor MacArthur's church. Tomorrow is the final day. You can watch the stream live at: www.shepherdsconference.org/live/ And I believe they will soon post the archives of this year's conference on-line too. If you look at tms.edu (which is the Master's Seminary, the seminary at Pastor MacArthur's church), there is an alumni link where you can search for graduates from the seminary all over the world. It is a good start for looking for a church. "To God be the glory, great things He has done. So loved He the world that He gave us His son!"
  18. Hi Sarah, I am new to this, so I do not know. I don't even know what FLL and WWE are, without referring to the abbreviation sticky. :001_smile: I saw Shurley English on the Rainbow Resources site and have read about it here on the forums. I thought we'd give it a try. It is a grammar program with songs.
  19. We are towards the end of OPGTR too. As far as LA curriculum goes next year we are planning to try Surely English level 1 and continue with Explode the Code (ETC). We are further ahead in OPGTR than ETC, so I view ETC as a review and further practice.
