Prayer for my oldest son PLEASE

Recommended Posts

Pedialyte? or another electrolyte drink? Cranberry juice (the naturally sweetened kind) is supposed to be good for UTIs. I would add something like carbonated water to make it bubbly if his stomach is upset.

Thanks Jean. I forgot to include the fact that on a really good day he is VERY picky I know he would not to the cranberry juice I will have to talk to him about the Pedialyte though. That might be an option.

Well, he is back in bed and not wanting me to call the hospital. SOOOOO I guess I will let it go for a while, let him rest and see how he is. I keep telling myself that he is almost 42 yrs old and in charge of his own care.:001_unsure:

This has to end though SOON!

Difficult, long night. Not so good morning. Ugh! when will it be over of him.

I am calling the hospital as soon as I get him finished with his shower routine. He is STILL running 101.1 temp in the morning.

Please, PLEASE, if you're reading this, don't CALL the hospital, TAKE HIM TO IT. I fear his UTI has turned into sepsis, which is life threatening. Many, MANY times my mother was hospitalized due to this, and it always started with a UTI.

I used to give my mother cranberry juice as a preventive - the unsweetened kind. I'd add stevia to it. I kept UTI's away for me, and they were cut WAY back for my mother.. If your ds doesn't like cranberry, mix it with oj, or soda that doesn't have HFCS. They also have cranberry pills. PLEASE get him these. Paralized people are prone to UTI's and this will help him.

I do hope he's hospitalized today. My mother needed heavy duty, STRONG, iv antibiotics for DAYS each and every time she was hospitalized. It's very hard when the UTI's present with no symptoms. If this continues to be a problem, maybe you can have a culture done on his urine weekly or biweekly. This is what I did with my mom and we caught many UIT's right at the very beginning. You may even be able to get drs orders to get the sample at home and bring it to a lab yourself. This is what we did.

I may have missed a post but it sounds like he might need another ua to see if the antibiotics are working. My other thought is that none of us are good decision makers when we aren't feeling well. I have yet to meet an ill man that doesn't need some direction. :D I'm praying for all of you.

this is true. More than once we started on one antibiotic, didn't get the results we should have, and switched to another.

Still, I'm so concerned your son's UTI may have reached the bloodstream and has caused sepsis. My grandmother died of a UTI which turned into sepsis. IF your son already had sepsis, a urine analysis wouldn't show it. Neither would a simple blood test. They took several tubes of blood, all different colored tubes, some with liquid in them, and grew a culture over days. In the meantime, before results were in, she was immediately started on heavy duty, IV antibiotics. You can't delay treatment of sepsis. To do so could kill you. I don't want to scare you, but I DO want to urge you to take him to the ER. I don't think it's right that he still has this fever 2.5 days after starting antibiotics. Even so, sepsis is a VERY REAL possibility with this situation.

As a physical therapist who (pre-kids) worked in a rehab hospital treating people with SCI, I echo Denise's sentiments. For a quad- or anyone prone to UTIs- to continue to have symptoms this long after starting an antibiotic is not normal. He likely needs something much stronger. Does he have a specialist in SCI who coordinates his care?

I'm not a medical professional, so I don't have any ideas about the fever or the antibiotic. Just wanted to suggest, though, for the liquids that you could get him some lemon-lime soda at Whole Foods or another health food store. I think it's more expensive than 7-Up, but if it helps settle his stomach and gets fluid into him without HFCS it might be worth it.

We try to avoid HFCS so once in a great while we get Jarritos sodas for the kids; our local grocery store sells them in the "ethnic foods" aisle with Mexican foods. They are brightly-colored, though, so that may be exchanging one danger for another.

Just wondering how your son is feeling today, Sandy. I do hope he's starting to feel better.

Thank you.

Yes, he is stronger today and hasn't had the temp.

He REFUSED to go the hospital so.......

I do believe we are on the mend now though.

I think our whole family is exhausted though. Even the kids seem to be whooped.

Glad to hear he's feeling a little stronger. Do try to get him to push fluids if you can- even just getting lots of water through will help flush the urinary system. OJ is even better, if he prefers that to unadulterated cranberry juice.

Not a recommendend practice, but once when I was young & stupid I drank a whole half gallon of OJ over a couple of days to deal with a UTI. I was newly married, and didn't have a primary care physician in the city I where I was living. I literally called 10 family practice & internal medicine specialists trying to get an appointment. After the last "NO" I was so exasperated I didn't know what else to do. The last two had told me to go to the ER but I was afraid my insurance wouldn't pay for it since it wasn't an "emergency" at that moment. The massive amount of OJ actually turned the tide for me & I was able to get over it without medical treatment. Like I say, not the recommended approach, but it did help.

He is getting 2-3 qts of water during the night and then it is 7 up. It seems like ANYTHING else(he has been able to eat plain buttered toast, 3-4 slices a day) just makes his stomach hurt and he starts trying to throw up. He can as he has very little diaphragm but his system tries and it take a tremendous amount of energy from him.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Well, we are headed to the Drs. in about 15 min. Ds went all day yesterday without a fever. Today he is running one again.:001_huh: Called the Dr that he saw last week and that put him on the med. She said go to the ER. He doesn't want to do that. Called his regular Dr. (the one he couldn't get in with at the beginning of all this and ended up in the er then) and he has an appointment for 4:10.

Ds is figuring out how they may agree to give him anti biotic iv and him not be admitted?:banghead: I told him he can try but I don't think it is going to happen.

UGH! Young children are easier.

Asking for prayer once again.

When someone doesn't have a lot of control over things in their life, any control they can exert becomes very important to them, even if it isn't in their best interest. :grouphug: Perhaps if you brain-storm a couple of scenarios that your ds can choose from, he will consent to the treatment. :grouphug: Praying for him and for you.

We are home and the Dr felt we needed to give it another couple of days. In the mean time he is having the lab that did the UA do a culture. I do have confidence in this Dr. He doesn't hesitate to put you in the hospital when he feels it is needed and I feel that he would have sent ds there if he felt it necessary.

He did say ds needed to take the med WITH food which the pharm. has said wasn't necessary. That may help some.

One more update. They admitted ds tonight. He had felt better yesterday but today was worse again with a low grade fever, appetite gone again, etc. Did blood work and white count was over 20,000 so decided to admit him.

Thanks to everyone that has been praying for him. Please continue.

Talked to ds's Dr this morning and he will probably be in until at least Wed. maybe Thurs or Friday. The good new is his white count has come down greatly(it is down to 13,000) so he is on the mend.

You guys have been such a blessing.
