hornblower
I just dropped off my foster at the big fancy dog critical care facility for an ultrasound guided biopsy of his liver & some other tests. He's a wonderful, sweet, big, black oaf but he has some severe internal problems and we are trying to ascertain whether they're fixable or not. I posted a photo of him here: http://hmsindefatigable.blogspot.com/2010/04/lazy-sundays.html - when he was naughty and counter surfed. And here's his youtube singing debut - back when he still had his coat (which had to be shaved because it was actually one big stinking mat....be glad youtube doesn't have a 'smell' feature) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoEXJWj69W8 Pls cross your paws that the ultrasound goes ok, the anesthetist gets the right combination of meds (not an easy task because his liver is not working well at all), the surgeon gets all the samples he needs, and that we get good answers from the histology. Bear deserves to have many happy waggy days.

hornblower
Thanks guys! He made it through phase 1! He's home, still stoned & zoned out on a doggie bed but happy to be back. I am glad this part went well as the last time we tried to do an ultrasound (under conscious sedation) he was in real distress and they gave up on it - hence the referral to the specialist & having it done where they had an ICU standing by..... Now we wait for pathology results. (where's the gnawing on fingernails emoticon?)

hornblower
So, the biopsies came ok & we had scheduled a surgical repair of the hernia. (not a small decision as it's expensive surgery & no guarantees of outcomes) Hwvr he deteriorated really badly over the weekend & I took him to emerg today. His lungs were whited out on the x-ray, they gave him lasix and apparently had some white knuckle moments inducing anesthesia. They thought they'd lose him then but finally got him intubated and his SO2's perked back up. They're doing the surgery now but the big worry is how damaged the lungs are. If they're badly damaged, they may not recover, and in that case, we would not have him wake up. They sent me home after they got him under & so now we all wait. :crying:

Jean in Newcastle
:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I'm sorry. Waiting is always hard. And when the outcome is so uncertain, it must be so much harder.

Teachin'Mine
I'm glad he made it through the procedures and anesthesia okay. Praying for good results for Bear. My kitty just walked across the laptop - I think he just wanted to give Bear a free cat scan. :)
hornblower
Whew - he made it through the surgery! Still some puzzling things remain & we will need to see how he recovers. His condition is 'guarded' & he'll be staying in ICU for a few days. thanks for the good wishes everyone :grouphug:

hornblower
He's recovering well so far! I had a long visit with him today & gave him a good massage. He was a bit ticked with me at first that I wasn't there to break him out. He kept pointing at the door - THERE, THE DOOR, LET'S GO! - but they're keeping him sedated so eventually he settled in to enjoy his massage & even gave me a kiss. So far so good

hornblower
He's astounding everyone with his speedy recovery. Get this - they let me bring him home last night! Breathing was fine, chest tube got pulled & they redid his liver tests & they came back normal! On Monday his liver enzymes were 100x regular values & his lungs were completely whited out on x-rays, so full of fluid he was. He was literally drowning & going into liver failure...... but now he's back, like nothing happened except he has a really weird hair cut & some really grody stitches all up his belly He's on percocet for the pain & we're keeping him nice & quiet. Thanks everyone for your well wishes & crossed paws. I'll be doing up a little photo montage of him ('cause now the fundraising kicks in to high gear to pay his vet bills LOL) & I'll post a link when it's done. Bear continues to recover well. He's in the 'My stitches are itchy. What do you mean I can't lick them???' phase :D
