What sorts of things does your 2nd/3rd grade grammar stage student memorize?

My son memorizes math facts, grammar facts, some science facts....but in terms of, say, memorizing all the kings of Englands plus dates (for example)..well, we don't do that. Wondering about the importance of memorizing for memorization's sake for his mental development.

What sorts of things does your elementary child memorize?

My dd7 is in 2nd. We have done the Kings of England this year, plus math facts, science things like order of the planets and colors of the rainbow, Bible verses from Sunday school, and a few poems.

For 3rd, we will try the suggested lists in WTM too. I can't remember the exact differences in the 3rd and 4th grade history suggestions off the top of my head. But we have had success with doing it, and had fun practicing our lists. We will keep it up.

I checked out a bunch of poetry books from the library and picked out ones I liked along with poems I already knew I liked. Ditto with going through the Psalms. Isaiah corresponded with Christmas, so that was an easy pick. At the time that I planned the second grade list, I remember being focused on finding poems that encouraged discipline/responsibility/etc.

I think I started with a TWTM list for third grade, but added other things that fit in that I found as I planned our American History study. John Donne I threw in .... because I love him, LOL. :-)

My 2nd grader has memorized poems, hymns, the books of the Bible, lots of Bible verses, math facts and parts of grammar, some science facts (order of the planets etc), and some facts for geography (things like the oceans, continents, and each country that we've studied this year. ) Next year we will go back to history rather than geography, but I don't plan to have him memorize alot for history like the WTM says. Basically just whatever I happen to think is important out of our curr. :001_smile:

I am too! I am looking for primarily secular stuff to memorize, and since DS already memorizes science and math stuff, I am thinking I'd like to focus on history and poetry. He has memorized all the greek and roman gods, and I think we're going to move on to geography memorization-he knows the continents and major countries in those continents, but I'd like him to REALLY know his countries and their capitals.

My 2nd grader is/has memorizing math facts, she memorized all the 50 states (and most of their locations) the continents, oceans, the order of the planets, interesting facts about each of the planets, we are working on the parts of speech :glare:

Next year we are going to focus on poetry, history and whatever else I come up with :)
