Brindee
The Title of this thread is a spin-off of the Chemistry thread. :001_smile: I would like a Biology that includes Human Anatomy like it did when I was in school. DD doesn't care for Biology, so it's something we want to just get through, so, the more "fun", the better. She also does NOT want to do dissection! Is that possible to get through highschool Bio. with no dissection? Is there any program out there like this? I looked at Prentice-Hall Bio., but can't figure out what I need. :001_huh: Has anyone used the PH Bio. that can tell me what I'd need to get? Corraleno
The new (2010) version of the PH Miller & Levine Biology text has a shorter/easier edition called the "Foundations" edition. It does include Human Anatomy & Physiology. It's also quite focused on evolution, though (not sure if that is an issue for you). The illustrations are beautiful. You can see the entire book online here (click on Preview Products): http://www.pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PSZ16f&filter_161=&filter_422=&filter_423=6732&filter_424=&filter_281=&filter_425=&programFilterTypeList=161%2C422%2C423%2C424%2C281%2C425&PMDbSiteid=2781&PMDbSolutionid=6724&PMDbSubSolutionid=&PMDbCategoryid=814&&PMDbProgramID=65061 The workbooks & lab notebooks come in 2 levels; A is the regular level and B is easier. It doesn't look like any of the labs include dissection. You could also use Froguts ($30 for 1-year subscription) which includes 5 or 6 virtual dissections as well as 2 genetics labs. The new Miller & Levine text (with the Macaw on the cover) is completely different from the previous editions ~ it's been rewritten, redesigned, and much of the material (especially on evolution and genetics) has been updated from the old "Dragonfly" edition. So, unfortunately, it's difficult to find any of the components used since it was just released this year. Jackie
Emma
I'm not sure how "easy" it is, but Abeka's 10th grade biology has a DVD with ALL the labs shown. You watch the DVD and fill in the lab book, just like you did the experiment or dissection, except you didn't. It's what I'm planning on for my non science kid. Brindee
It's also quite focused on evolution, though (not sure if that is an issue for you). Thankyou, I went and checked this out. It looks very interesting! But.....though I don't mind dd studying about evolution, it would probably not work out to have a text that is focused on it, since we are creationist. If it wasn't evolution focused I'd be leaning toward this one! :001_smile:

Go to this blog: http://www.rockinhsmom5.blogspot.com/ On the left hand side she has an ACE box. Click on ACE Curriculum Samples, then click on Science. I was trying to locate where, if anyplace, they had samples online. Also, ACE will send you one free sample. So, you could call them and ask to have a biology pace sent so you can get an idea of how they are.
IsabelC
Just adding, I wouldn't get too stressed about the dissection. It's only to extend what they've already learnt from diagrams to looking at the real thing, and anyway, lots of squeamish kids sit out the dissection sessions at school. stripe
Just adding, I wouldn't get too stressed about the dissection. It's only to extend what they've already learnt from diagrams to looking at the real thing, and anyway, lots of squeamish kids sit out the dissection sessions at school. I sure did. I read about the anatomy of a frog instead of cutting one open. I think if I were to do it over again, I would try to work purposeful dissection in -- by studying, for example, a whole chicken or fish and preparing it for human consumption. Some sort of science "meats" hunting class. Remove the feathers, study the skin, remove the feet, the beak, cut the chicken, trim things, remove the organs and whatnot. I think it's good to know how things work. I am not sure I have that knowledge. Except, perhaps, of a frog. Delighted to see a thread about non-rigorous things. Although I'd imagine dead animals would be quite rigor-filled. ;)
jelbe5
Just another word about dissection: In high school I had no problems actually doing the dirty work whereas my lab partners simply watched. If for some reason you feel you must/want to include dissections in your program, you can view many dissections online. Some are actual dissections, some are virtual. I don't have links to share handy, but I have googled the topic and have found links where the student (and teacher) may watch the process. Some include printable worksheets, etc. My dd participates in a small group for Apologia Physical Science. A total of three families get together about 2x per month so the kids can do the labs together. Next year we plan to do Biology but we have opted not to do the actual dissections but use virtual dissections instead, as they come up in the text. We also plan to use online videos/slides in place of an expensive microscope. We all have a cheap microscope where the use and parts may be learned, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. We are all on a very strict budget so we talked it over and felt using the internet to "see" slides would be fine for our purposes. Hope this is helpful and encouraging. Amy in CO
We used this program mentioned above: Principles, Theories, and Precepts of Biology and Precepts of Anatomy and Physiology. I got our set at Rainbow Resource. My dd is on book 6 for biology, and will be starting anatomy next month. For us they have been very good. I added in dissection and a few other experiments. I want my dd to know the basics, but it is very obvious that science is not her passion.

You can get teacher materials and tests, and lab notebook also. I was planning to use this with my dd who went to school for 10th, so I haven't used it yet. One more coming along, maybe I'll get to use it with him. Hope you find exactly what you are looking for! Blessings,

Yeah, That's what hit me---it was exactly what we wanted for dd's Bio., I just didn't know it yet. When she put everything together, it was just right! My dd put it this way: "I don't like Biology, Physics is okay, but I LOVE Chemistry!" Her math skills, though, aren't where they need to be to take the highschool Chem, then the advanced Chem., which is what she wants to do. So, I figured getting Biology overwith now, in 9th, might be the best plan. During that year she'll be doing Algebra, so by the next year she'll be more confident in that area, and be able to get through the Chemistry better! I'd hate for her to lose her love of Chemistry, and if we wait a year for it (she wanted to do it this year), that love is more likely to stay intact! :D I haven't seen Bio 100. Is it by the same people as 101?

This looks great! Are you going to use anything further for labs other than what is listed above? You had such great ideas, I thought I'd pick your brain a little more. :)
Marsha
We are using the same thing. We will add Dissection, Find and identify 30-50 different plants/flowers, and keep a Nature notebook.

Is it a biology thing too, since you study cell and structure, etc.? My oldest ds took Phys. Sci. at a coop, and they collected and id'd plants. It was a GREAT experience for him! Is there a specific thing you're using to help with the ideas for the plant id and the nature notebook?
DianeJM
Good Morning All! This is the PM I sent to Brindee regarding Biology. My daughter will be doing 9th grade in the fall and here is the Biology plan for her. We are using Biology 101 DVD's as the base. I wasn't even thinking about biology yet, my ds is only in 5th. But I will keep this info for later. Maybe I can coordinate this stuff with my CLP biology book that I'm hoping to use. I really appreciate you posting these links, Heather, thanks so much for sharing them. Thanks, Brindee, for asking the question, and thanks, everyone for the great info!!! I probably should go read the "not rigorous Chemistry" thread while I'm at it. Hope everyone has a great day. Blessings,
Love2Smile
Now all we need is a syllubus or schedule for this! *hint hint*
atozmom
I found this at RR, it's listed as middle and high school. Biology 100+ Reproducible Series. It might tie in well with the DVD's and other books.

atozmom
Thanks! :001_smile: Thank you for starting this thread! Please let us know what you think about the Biology 101 DVD's. Dd is not into science and she likes Biology least of all. Trying to find a biology curriculum that is not rigorous and is written from a Christian perspective is hard. I wonder how an "Introduction to Biology" for a half credit would look on a transcript? The other half of the year maybe do astronomy or geology for another half credit. This would make dd even happier. :001_smile:

Or, if you aren't doing Physical Science on it's own, maybe you can do units on Biology and Physical science and call it something like Physical and Biological Science. A&P Unit, Plants (collect, identify, press, make a notebook), Cell Unit, etc. I wonder if something like that would work? You can add in the outside reading on things she's interested in. As long as she puts in the required amount of hours to make 1 credit, then it should work, right?! It sounds like you're looking for something like I was! I haven't received the Biology 101 DVD's yet. I'm looking forward to seeing what they're like and how dd likes them. I'll let you know what we think!
