ereks mom
Turns out IT WAS HIS R.A.!!!!  A couple of nights ago, ER & his roommate each received cryptic text messages from the R.A. which said somethng to the effect of "when you find out, just know that I'm sorry & it wasn't really me, it was the addiction". ER says no one knew the RA had an addiction. ER's roommate says he received a second message in which the guy stated outright "I am the thief". The R.A. has been arrested, but ER learned yesterday that none of the stolen property has been recovered. We are still hopeful, though. We'd appreciate your prayers. ETA: For those who missed it, here's the link to the original thread about the stolen laptop. Edited January 9, 2010 by ereks mom

Dayle in Guatemala
"RA" is resident advisor. This is the person responsible for the students on their floor that they are assigned to. What a breach of trust. Sorry this happened.
TN Mama
An RA is a Resident Advisor in a dorm. How terribly sad. Glad that the arrest has been made.
Jean in Newcastle
Well, it does make sense since his R.A. would have a key to his room.
ereks mom
Well, it does make sense since his R.A. would have a key to his room. ...believe that a FRIEND would steal from him & other friends as well.
Chris in VA
I'm so sorry E has to go thru this--perhaps his RA is getting help now. That would be a good thing.

Baloney. Way to shrug off the blame. :glare: Glad he was caught. Somehow I don't think it'll be his addiction that will get punished. ;)
Jean in Newcastle
I am so sorry that the R.A. was a friend. That's a tough lesson. :grouphug: for ER
LittleIzumi
Addiction makes people do craaaaaaazy things. If his RA really does have one, I hope he now gets the help he needs!! That STINKS though, the whole situation. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I'm amazed they caught him--did the RA turn himself in or actually get caught? Vida Winter
Wowza. That's a hard life lesson. I hope he gets the laptop recovered. At the very least you will know what happened and hopefully the law (and the school) will deal with it. :grouphug:
Liz CA
Well, it does make sense since his R.A. would have a key to his room. You mean they have access to students' belongings at any time? That leaves it wide open to abuse. Sheesh.
ereks mom
I think the process included background checks. Maybe it should also include drug screening too, assuming it doesn't already. He's usually a great judge of character.
hillfarm
Does the RA, or if he is still a dependent, his family, have insurance that would cover ER's computer? Or I would ask the school if they have liability insurance that would cover the loss that was caused by the RA, since he had a key and access to the student rooms that was provided by the school. Sonshine
I would think that since the theft was by a school employee the school should cover the loss, one way or the other.
SonshineLearner
Seems like if it was the RA then the College should be taking responsibility. The RA had a key to the room.... etc... and they are hired to rule over the dorm on the college's behalf.
StephanieZ
:iagree:I am pretty confident the employer (college) would be culpable to pay for the laptop. A call to the admin & request for a meeting w/ the college's legal counsel to "request" to be "made whole" is in order, IMHO. mom2abcd
Oh, what a sad story. I, too, hope this is just what ER's friend needed to get HELP before something even worse happens. BTW, my roommate was an RA and she didn't have keys to the rooms. I suppose it might vary by college.
coffeefreak
The college might reimburse you or help to buy a new computer since it involved one of their staff. How sad.
ereks mom
Just curious: What or who is "RA". I figured out ER is your dc even though first I read "Emergency Room". I would be EREK's Mom but on another board I used to visit, we couldn't use punctuation marks in our user names, so I just became ereks mom. I see that others have already explained R.A. :001_smile:
Wyndie
I'm glad he was caught and hopefully the school will replace the computers.
