shadowcat
My daughter just got hurt. She sharpened her pencil and was walking back to the table when she somehow managed to gouge her palm with it. Its long, and deeper than a scrape, but not bleeding. There's graphite all in the wound and although I cleaned her hand I can't get it out. Does anyone know of a good way to clean her palm? My husband's suggestion was to just leave it there, but I'm not wild about that. I know graphite isn't going to poison her or anything, but it doesn't belong inside our skin. I also don't love the thought of going to a doctor for something so simple. So I'm at a loss here.
Carrie12345
The only thing I can tell you is that I survived a pencil stabbing. ;) I do remember having a black mark on my arm for a lot longer than I had expected, but it did eventually go away! Jean in Newcastle
Personally, I would just slather it really well with antibiotic ointment.
shadowcat
OK, thanks. At the moment I have her soaking it in epsom salts, hoping the soak will clean it off a little better than I could.
Aunty Social
I would soak it. A friend of my dd's got dirt and gravel in a bad scrape, and that was what the dr. told them to do. I'd soak it a couple times a day, followed by a mild scrub and some antibiotic ointment. It might take a couple days, but should come clean. Maybe it's time for a bubble bath? shadowcat
Oh, that's a good idea! She loves bathtime.
AndyJoy
I still have a 10-year-old piece of graphite in my right palm from the first day of 12th grade! Soaking sounds like a good idea.
Sputterduck
I still have the graphite mark on my finger from when my friend accidentally stabbed me when I was 4. Get it out somehow... Mine hasn't gone away and it's been 25 years.
Mommyof4ks
Soaking and peroxide sound good to me. I still have a bluish gray spot on my leg from my sister stabbing me with a pencil and the lead breaking off 20 years ago. My dad got most of it out, but the 'left overs' never went away. shadowcat
That's what I'm afraid of. Darn it! Thank you all. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Impish
It would hurt like Hades, but I wonder about using a nail brush on the wound, as gently as possible after soaking. That's the only thing I can think of that might get the graphite out. Poor kiddo :grouphug:
jplain
I have a graphite scar on my hand. Oddly enough, I'm kind of fond of the small marks I've acquired. Yes, I know I'm strange. :tongue_smilie: Aside from gentle cleansing and perhaps application of Neosporin, I think I'd just leave your daughter's hand alone. If it was in a location that could be disfiguring (I dunno, on her face maybe?), I'd see a dermatologist for advice. I'd not make any attempt to do any deep cleansing of the wound without a physician's input first.
shadowcat
I'm probably over reacting, but I got us an appointment with her ped for this afternoon.
mchel210
I did that in 3rd grade. You can still see the lead mark in my hand! I wouldn't worry. As far as I can tell...IM ok...lol...but my hand has a black mark right in the center:)
shadowcat
Well, the ped managed to get it cleaned out so I'm happy. It was just as well we went, too, because he also told me he thinks she has allergies (she's had a cough).
