muffinmom
I have searched the boards but cannot find this thread to save my life. Or does anyone know of such a program--one that teaches the basics of music?

brehon
I don't remember the post you're referencing; but, could you explain a little more what you mean? Are you thinking about instrument lessons and theory? Music history (especially in relation to whatever time period/culture you're studying)? Lives/Major works of representative composers/time periods? That might help people give you some information.
muffinmom
*my memory* of the post was that the curric. in question did a great job of building a foundation in music...more so in concepts and terms related to music theory and application rather than history or composers. I remember it being described as giving those basic "pegs" that would be useful in any music study. I feel like I'm still not explaining it well (mainly because my memory is fuzzy about it!). Chris in VA
Don't know, but I've heard BJU Music is quite good, and not just a composer study/history study. Could that be it? RR has a good description of their stuff.
1bassoon
I don't know. . . . . But maybe I should write one! I have some bang-up, "How to Listen to Music" lessons from my teaching days. . . .

Do you want your kids to study music theory? I'm sorry, I'm probably being dense about this. It seems to me that learning the concepts and terms related to music theory is learning music theory. If this is the case, then I'd suggest picking up a theory book from any one of a number of piano books (Alfred's, Faber's, etc). Most piano programs have lesson, theory, technique, and repertoire books for each level. If you start with a Primer level theory book, that ought to get you started. Tree House Academy
Check out CLE Music. There are 8 books and each one builds on the next. Over the 8 books, it covers fundamentals - the "mechanics" like scales, notes, lines, meter, pitch, rhythm...
dangermom
Are you thinking of Musikgarten (or Kindermusik)? My kids are in Musikgarten and that's pretty much the idea. I love the program; it gives a really solid and deep foundation in music, with the idea that the kids learn music sort of like learning a language. Here's their webpage. Guest Katia
Maybe Praise Hymn Inc.'s God Made Music series?
Night Elf
Another site with a catalog is http://www.friendshiphouse.com/ The first thing I thought about as I read your post was the Theory Time Music Theory Library. I don't have any experience with it but I remember thinking about getting it. Now that my dd11 is playing piano, it might be a good gift to get her. :)

ClassicMom
http://www.classicalmagic.net/ Classical Magic; Themes to Remember. They are those yellow books with the CD's in them. Take a look at the website and look around to see if this is what you were looking for. If so, the books are much less expensive at Rainbow Resources. mom2abcd
Pianimals uses the slogan "the phonics of music"... Is that what you were thinking of? http://www.pianimals.com/ It eases kids into playing the piano.
Terabith
I think K12's music curriculum does that.....
