  1. I read Christina but it took a few seconds. I think eewnique spellings make the parents look ignorant personally.
  2. I don't believe that's entirely true. No one likes to talk about all the meds prescribed that CAUSE obesity. And there are a heck of a lot of them. No, people are just always fat because they won't "put a donut down". Junky food and high carb foods are the cheapest foods.
  3. WF is awful. I'm glad you went with a credit union!
  4. I'm combining LOF with MM for my 10 yos right now.
  5. I'm considering Megawords for my almost 11 yo ds who is not a natural speller. We've had some improvement this year with Spelling Power but not really to my satisfaction. He has no trouble passing a test. But when comes to actually spelling words correctly in regular usage it just comes out really badly. He's not dyslexic. He reads well and is otherwise at or above grade level. Do we need to start with book 1? I can't find out how to place him. Thanks.
  6. So far what we do is print out one chapter at a time, hole punch it and put it in a binder. I have 3 grades and have dividers between the grades. The children just remove the page they are working on.
  7. Is there by chance a thread of what people are using with their 3rd graders? I didn't find anything using the search function. I'd love to know what other people are planning. I like getting ideas from hearing what others are doing. My current plan for my 3rd grader is to use Ages of Grace which will cover History, Literature, Religion, Picture Study, Narration and Geography. Most of that will be done together as a family. Otherwise he'll be finishing up MM 3 and starting MM 4. I have New American Cursive for handwriting and MCT's Building Language for vocabulary. I'm undecided on spelling, grammar and science right now. He did Growing with Grammar 2 last year.
  8. DS is dysgraphic and it was recommended we get him started keyboarding. I've looked at http://www.talkingfingers.com/readwritetype/RWT-learning-system.html and it looks pretty good. But it has a strong emphasis on reading which we don't need. Is there something similar out there? I like this because it takes it slow and doesn't introduce too many new letters at once. The voices are clear. And there is also no disappointed noises made if you make an error like I've seen elsewhere. DS is about to turn 10.
  9. I was going to say chickens as well. I did not realize the amount of ticks we had till insisted on keeping our chickens in the chicken run to keep them out of my gardens. We had a real explosion in the tick population. I'm trying to just fence all I can in this year and let the chickens out more. I'd love Guineas and we bought some last year but a predator killed them all. :(
  10. I do not need a student text for Caesar's English or Building Language? I can just use the Teacher's Manual?
  11. Thank you all for the encouragement. I think it's a wonderful idea to point out where he excels every day to him. DS is a wonderful little boy. He is incredibly sweet and loving and kind. He just brings me a lot of joy and always has. I just feel so overwhelmed at providing what he needs. Could someone explain LiPS and Barton more to me? Is this something I can do on my own? Does insurance cover it? Any recommendations for how to help him with his fine motor skills?
  12. We finally got my 10yob's testing results back from the psychiatrist. He's high functioning Autistic. I'd really appreciate some ideas though of how to address the problems that were brought up. I plan to call around tomorrow and get Speech and Occupation Therapy set up. But I need help with what to do at home for him. On the DAS-II what was particularly bad was his Spatial Ability being 7th percentile. His Recall of Designs being 2nd percentile and Sequential and Quantitative Reasoning being 18th percentile. He was basically unable to recall "simple and novel designs immediately after presentation". We are talking about basic shapes he could not recall. :/ His phonological awareness is impaired. He struggled significantly with segmenting words and manipulating sounds within words. On the KTEA-II he's in the 1st percentile for Written Expression and Phonological Processing. And while his reading has actually improved a lot his Reading Comprehension and Letter and Word Recognition on the KTEA-II were pretty low. Last year he couldn't read at all. He couldn't get through a word without forgetting what he'd already sounded out. He couldn't keep track of where the word was on the page! His fine motor skills are a huge struggle and always have been. He still can not write his own name, Isaac, without letter reversal. We started cursive this year and that has helped things significantly with letter reversal but he still struggles with being able to even remember what different letters look like. He needs constant prompting. He needs constant prompting to stay on task with absolutely everything in his life. The CPT-II showed that a 98% chance of a "clinically significant difficulty with attention exists". His reaction time is slowed. He makes lots of omission errors etc. He has a slow reaction time and difficulty processing "both verbal and visually complex problems". He's inefficient, disorganized and easily overwhelmed. That last sentence sounds like me! LOL I'm overwhelmed! :crying: And depressed over it all. I just need some ideas from other moms who deal with these kinds of issues in homeschooling. I'm grateful the psychiatrist seemed very supportive of homeschooling and never suggested we can't possibly help him but that he needs to be in school. But I'm in the midst of planning for next year and don't know where to begin here. Would Elizabeth's phonics page and the Syllabary help with his phonological procession problems? We've been going through OPGTR and he's most of the way through. And he does not struggle with it. But she said he did read about average. *sigh*
  13. If it was precut then it would probably go down hill fast. I find it very hard to get a good coconut at any store around me other than a certain farmers market I go to that has very fresh food.
  14. Prayers for you to feel better soon!
  15. I think 4 or more seems large in our society. But in my mind you need 7 to have a large family. I only have 6. I'm sure that sounds silly because I hear so much about how large our family is.
  16. That's wonderful! My in laws have been doing that for us for the past few years and it helps soo much!
  17. Many things of a sexual nature that are common now were once illegal. What happens is that people just stop obeying the law and it grows normal. I think most people recognize that it's seriously hypocritical to say that two men or two women can have their own family/marriage (whether legal or not) but that a man and more than one woman can't. The tradition behind polygamy is thousands of years old. It's legal in one state to sell your body for sex. It's legal in all states to strip for money. It's legal to have sex on camera and sell it for public viewing. It's legal to abort your unborn. I can personally hardly find polygamy offensive after those things. I think it's sort of out dated and stupid in light of all the things that ARE legal to keep this one illegal. All those things listed above were once illegal.
  18. Oh, boy, this just made me cry. I found it so so stressful to even watch. I think I would have been sick to my stomach if I'd been there.
