  1. We read more than we analyze but I think it important to go through some books slowly and pick them apart. These means that we analyze less books than we might otherwise but the slow steady pace works for us.
  2. We do have to work at it. Since I started enforcing the no playing with neighbor kids until homework is done, the pace has picked up dramatically.:)
  3. Well I have done taxes for the last few years. Only people with kids get very much in earned income credit - which phases out as income goes up - to be replaced by the child tax credit - which most middle income people get. People do get very emotional on these issues but the tax codes are very complex and there are tax breaks for just about everyone - not just poor people. Also, there are many very hard working single moms who put their earned income credit to extremely good use.
  4. I second Writing Road to Reading for this particular situation.:iagree:
  5. Banks have always had a certain amount of time to do electronic transfers. I do taxes and run into this all the time. The federal government actually does release the refunds when they say they will. But people that need to have the fees to do their taxes taken out of their refund can either get a check or a direct deposit through a bank. We quit doing the direct deposit through the bank because of the lag time. Some banks transfer the money as soon as they get it, but some don't which makes people fairly upset<G>! Unfortunately, not a new practice.:confused:
  6. Well I certainly don't want to get into a shooting match about ALEKS, but we used it for all of last year and it definitely adds things back in if they are missed on tests. The parent can also request retesting anytime they want.
  7. ALEKS tests on a regular basis and puts missed items back on the list of things to learn. You also don't have to go back to the fourth grade. Whatever course you sign up for, the student starts with a 'smart' diagnostic test to determine what the students does and does not remember. It is not a perfect program by any means (none are) but does work well at finding and working on gaps in the math knowledge base.
  8. If you are aware of the issue and work with your daughter, there will be progress. My youngest is the perfectionist type and is now in 8th grade. We just had a good conversation about this trait and the discussion went well. It wouldn't have gone so well a few years ago.:)
  9. We are only on day 2 of school since we ordered our books late and they just came Tuesday evening. We went with Calvert 8 this year and also got the desk top apprentice rotating organizer. So far so good. Day 1 was very long but dd is already getting used to the new books and finishing up more quickly. She loves having the manual to follow since she can keep going when I am busy. The program is very schoolish but this daughter is the type to thrive with traditional schooling. So far there have been a few minor complaints but we worked through them.<g> I find myself feeling fairly good about school. I was a bit burned but that may be natural since I have been homeschooling for 15 years. I want to thank whoever recommended the organizer. Everything fits perfectly and my daughter loves it!:D
  10. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Sympathy!
  11. I used to add soy flour - don't have the exact recipe but I experimented to find out how much I could put in without the kids or hubby noticing.<g>
  12. Just keep in mind the weather when the kids are in school. We go to Maine every summer and have a blast but during the school year would not have near as much fun outdoors!
  13. Sounds like you have given TT Alg I a good try and things are at a stand still. Have you considered a program like ALEKS. Perhaps your daughter has gaps in basic math that are holding her back and needs to catch up a bit before moving forward with Alg? You can try ALEKS free for one month while you continued to investigate programs.
  14. In our family's case night time coughing turned out to be asthma though it took us a while to figure it out. We didn't clue in until our daughter also complained of chest pain during the day. Oops! One of the downsides of being a third child<g>.
  15. Learning Language Arts Through Literature might fit the bill??? It is an all in one program.
  16. I think that a 4th year of foreign language is a highter level class and perhaps better on a transcript than a keyboarding/computer applications class; and also shows that the student is capable of persistence.
  17. My son took classes at the CC in place of AP classes and it was a good experience for him. That said, I am not sure that it is a better environment than public high school.
  18. Well, I just ordered Calvert 8 for my youngest and last homeschooled child. She likes structure and loves following a plan and asked for Calvert. I think it will go well. For the last few years, I have not changed once I have ordered books because we cannot afford to<g>. Deciding to use Calvert this year was a big switch!
